Warriors defeat Trojans, 50-6

It is what great teams are made of — recovering from fumbles and mental errors that cost a team yardage, exactly what the South Winn football team encountered in Friday’s rivalry matchup with Turkey Valley. The Warriors regained their composure and put together quality plays by the second quarter to leave Jackson Junction with a 50-6 victory over the Trojans.

“Our offensive line did a tremendous job of protecting our quarterbacks all night, and we were able to make some very explosive plays in the passing game,” noted coach Jason Ohrt. “Our first- and second-team defense played sound football most of the night, and our kick coverage was consistent as well.”

South Winn took control of the tempo of Friday’s contest early, forcing the Trojans to punt the ball after just four plays. Marching down the field from their own 30-yard line, the Warriors ate up three minutes of the clock before Christian Kleve bulldozed his way into the end zone to put SW on top, 6-0.

Those six points would be the only tallies put on the scoreboard in the first quarter, as the Warriors fumbled the ball at the Trojan 10-yard line with 3:35 in the first stanza.

The Warriors collected the pigskin on a Trojan punt early in the second quarter at their own 7-yard line, but a 76-yard TD pass from Garrett Bohach to Jordan Rommes put SW ahead, 12-0, with 9:07 still left to play.

It was Ryan Hageman’s turn to find the end zone three minutes later on a five-yard scamper to put the Warriors on top, 18-0, and big plays were far from over.

With 1:08 remaining in the half, Bohach found Rommes motoring down the field for a 73-yard TD to give the Warriors a comfortable 26-0 lead at halftime.

Taking the kickoff to open the second half, South Winn took full advantage of the pigskin possession and drove the ball from the SW 31 to the Trojan end zone in seven plays. Bohach had his eye on Carson Lensing at the goal line, but the pigskin shimmied through Lensing’s hands and landed in those of Rommes for the Warrior TD.

The Bohach/Rommes combination was working all night, as later in the third quarter the two hooked up again on a 22-yard TD play and South Winn ended the third period in the lead, 42-0.

A few miscues in the fourth quarter led to the Trojans scoring their lone points of the game with 5:48 on the clock. With time winding down quickly, the Trojans were looking to march down the field one last time before fumbling the ball at the TV 38. Mitchell Herold scraped up the pigskin and galloped to the end zone to put the game away, 50-6.

“We will need to address some of the fumbling problems we had and clean up a few other mistakes that were made, but we are heading in the right direction going into district play,” concluded Ohrt.

The Warriors open district play Friday as they host Sumner-Fredericksburg.
