Students were eager to return to the South Winn Elementary/Middle School classrooms yesterday (Tuesday, Aug. 20), complete with new school supplies, book bags, and clothes. Greeting them in the hallways and classrooms were also two new faces, Pamela Freeseman and Rachel Niles.

Freeseman joins the South Winn family as a teacher of the Early Childhood Success Program with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in early childhood education, elementary education and early childhood special education. She is also finishing her literacy minor for grades kindergarten through eighth grade.

“I expect my students to try their best, have fun, and set goals for themselves,” said Freeseman of the expectations she places on her students.

The West Union resident had already decided to become a teacher in grade school as each of her teachers from elementary through high school inspired her with their variety of skills and gifts.

“I wanted to be able to make a difference and help others,” noted Freeseman.

She added that the most difficult thing about being a teacher is budgeting and finding grants to help with field trips, classroom supplies, and other valuable materials.

When Freeseman isn’t busy in the classroom she enjoys spending time with family, being outdoors, camping, traveling, and gardening.

Rachel Niles comes to northeast Iowa from Sabula, which she described as a small Mississippi River town in southeast Iowa. She will be at the front of the language arts classes for sixth- through eighth-grade students. In addition, Niles has taken a position as the high school color guard director.

A graduate of St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Rachel is currently working on her master’s degree in education and her national board certification.

When it comes to her expectations of her students, Niles said, “I want them to be willing to learn, to be respectful to me and each other, and give their best effort.”

Having always loved school, Niles knew in middle school she wanted to be a teacher. She combined two more of her favorites – reading and writing – to find her path to a career as a language arts teacher.

“I loved playing school as a child, and now I get to do the real thing!” she added.

Niles comes to South Winn from another 1:1 laptop school and believes she can bring great technological ideas to the classroom, as well as a passion for personal writing that she hopes will spread to the students.

Outside of the classroom, Niles enjoys cooking, entertaining, singing, and spending time with family and friends. She also finds time for outdoor activities such as hiking, boating, and swimming.

Welcome to South Winn, Mrs. Freeseman and Miss Niles!
