Approximately two acres of land were recently donated by Rockwell Collins, Inc. to the Trails From Freeport (TFF) board. The donated property will be used as part of a future trail that will connect Freeport to the existing Trout Run Trail, an 11-mile recreational trail that loops around Decorah. Once the trail is completed, it will provide safe and easy access from the future trailhead at Freeport Park to the area leading up to and crossing River Road, adjacent to the Rockwell Collins facility.

Tom Hauber, Environmental, Safety, and Health specialist at Rockwell Collins, believes that this contribution is good for the company and the community.

“This donation and the involvement by Rockwell Collins is without a doubt the right thing to do and be involved with. Numerous employees currently bike to work and take walks in the area while on break. Now individuals will be able to use the trail, which offers a safe, accessible option for our employees as well as others in the Freeport area,” explained Hauber, who is also a TFF board member.

The Freeport “spur” to the Trout Run Trail should help alleviate safety issues that have arisen from heavy vehicular traffic combined with increased numbers of pedestrians and bikers along A6W/Old Stage Road between Freeport and Highway 9. Those who run, walk, or bike on the road in order to get to the Trout Run Trail will have a safer route to use once the extension to the trail is complete.

The TFF board has been actively raising funds for the addition to the trail since November 2012. An estimated $500,000 is the goal, with $125,000 being needed in order to finalize engineering and begin construction. Those wishing to make donations to the trail may do so by sending a check (payable to Northeast Iowa RC&D) to: Trails From Freeport Fund, PO Box 125, Decorah, IA 52101.
