Two wonderful days in West Union!

What a great couple of days in West Union!

First of all, July 4th at the Rec Complex…Mother Nature was so kind to us this year, unlike last year’s sauna. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day…great music, good food, a lovely Miss West Union pageant, lots of things for the kids to do, awesome fireworks, and, of course, the fellowship and camaraderie of the whole event.

Every Miss West Union candidate was beautiful, and any one would have been a wonderful representative for our town. Congratulations to Julie Breuer, who will be West Union’s new ambassador for the coming year.

I am already looking forward to next year’s 4th of July festivities, as the celebration seems to get bigger and better each year. If you weren’t able to come this year, make plans to join us next year!

Streetscape

Grand Opening

Now, for the BIG day, the Green Pilot Streetscape Grand Opening last Thursday.  What a special celebration we had!  Kudos to all who participated and listened to all the great things the guest speakers shared with the crowd!  And a HUGE, sincere thank-you to all those who worked so hard to make this fantastic project happen. Well done!

The downtown tours during the grand opening gave us all lots of interesting and valuable information on the entire state-of-the-art project, including the geothermal system, LED street lighting, and permeable pavers, but I think the most amazing thing to watch was the “water show.”

To see water coming out of a hydrant at 300 gallons per minute, with the only evidence of water being a dark spot in just two parking spaces (absolutely no standing water or puddle) – it is a real eye-opener as to the value of what we have done.  I think the next time it pours rain, I will go downtown, stand in a window and just watch the water disappear – and be thrilled there are no longer puddles or rivers to jump over!

Good news travels

When I am out of town and see people I know, I hear many comments about how beautiful our downtown has become.  One friend said, “In the beginning, I thought you’d all lost your minds, but now I get itwhat an improvement!”  A friend from Decorah told me she drove around two or three times, just to take it all in.

Isn’t it exciting to know that West Union, one of only two Green Pilot Communities in the state, is receiving nationwide and global attention? Yes, there are a few little things yet to be done – rest assured, they will be taken care of.

Hope you all watched every episode of KCRG’s “Our Town” on television last week.  We have a lot going for us in our community – we need to remember that – and it was great to hear our mayor note that more projects will be in the works in the near future.

MSWU plans new event

My personal involvement is with Main Street West Union, and it is a privilege and a lot of fun to take part.  I am hearing about more fun things planned for the summer, and one new event that I am excited about is a townwide Halloween party that is in the early planning stages. The committee is making plans and – a heads-up – will be making some phone calls for ideas and volunteers. A big thank-you to those who have already said yes.

Enjoy your summer, thank God for each day, and have fun in WU!
