Sister of Betty Spies dies on May 7

Diane Holmes, 77, of Perry, formerly of West Union, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry.  

Graveside services were held at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry on Tuesday, May 14. 

Diane Marie (Schmelzer) Holmes was born July 18, 1935, to George A. and Edna (Bloomfield) Schmelzer on the family farm near West Union.  

She attended school in West Union and graduated from Paris Beauty Academy.  

In 1952, she was united in marriage with Leo Shori. They traveled for the next 20 years in the military, including two tours in Germany.  

Diane moved to Perry in 1972 and worked at Woodward State Hospital.  

She married Richard “Dick” Holmes in 1977, and they made their home in Perry.

Diane enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting, playing the organ, and spending time with family, friends and her dogs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard Holmes; and two sons, Bobby and Steffen.

Survivors include two daughters, Sue (Gene) Heimerman and Shawn (Chriss) Barck, both of Perry; three grandchildren, Jessi (Jason) Lawrence of Jamaica, Ia., Quentin Martin (fiancée Allison Vuong) of West Des Moines, Eric Heimerman (special friend Micaela Zagar) of Perry; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Spies of West Union; many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Perry Humane Society and Iowa Hospice; they may be sent in care of Carris Family Funeral Home, 1721 Park St., Perry, IA 50220.
