Plans underway for Ossian Fest

This year, the Ossian Crown Club has decided to move the annual Ossian Fest celebration to Saturday, Aug. 10. The daylong event will begin with a breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Hall, sponsored by Security State Bank, and a 5K run/walk. Other new ideas being explored for interest include a firemen’s waterball fight and a beanbag tournament.

The organization is also seeking ideas for the 2013 Ossian Fest parade theme and the Ossian Fest grand marshal and Volunteer of the Year nominations.

Nominees for grand marshal should be Ossian-area residents who deserve to be honored for their community service. The grand marshal will be honored in the Ossian Fest parade on Saturday evening, Aug. 10.

Nominees for Volunteer of the Year should be Ossian-area residents who have volunteered for a community group, school, youth group or local not-for-profit organization. Look around Ossian, and then send in your nomination.

Contact the Crown Club’s co-presidents, Terry Linderbaum and Pam Buddenburg, with your ideas or stop by Blooms on Main with your nominations.

Also discussed at the Monday, April 8, meeting was the possibility of a fitness center opening in Ossian. The idea arose at the Winneshiek Medical Center’s community health forum.

Crown Club member Joe Kriener suggested organizing an ad hoc committee to investigate the community’s wishes, needs, and location.

Members of the Crown Club who presented WMC with the 850 signatures in support of an outpatient clinic on April 3 stated that no word has been received yet on the next step in making the project a reality.

“It was a good beginning. WMC will have to think of it from a business aspect,” stated Crown Club member Clark Goltz.

Also discussed were the downtown hanging flower baskets. LouAnn Langreck has started petunia plants for the planters to be placed along Main Street, but her greenhouse does not have the space to start a large quantity of plants for hanging baskets.

Terri Bushman will check with a greenhouse she has used in the past to see if 12 baskets can be purchased for less than $1500.

Any community member willing to donate toward the cost of the hanging baskets may contact any Crown Club member.

Goltz informed members that money was not received for the grant proposal submitted to the Winneshiek County Community Foundation. To date, the organization has $10,000, with a pledge of $12,000 from the City of Ossian for the stage at Carey’s Park.

Goltz will follow up on completing an application for a grant available through Ace Communications, which is earmarked to assist with economic development.

The Crown Club will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, April 29, in the Ossian library.
