Marvel’s death occurred Saturday, March 23, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Marvel Ann (Hoblit) Wagner was born April 5, 1928, to Charles and Ida (Rethammel) Hoblit in Charles City. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to a farm in Floyd County, just off the Shell Rock River.

Marvel graduated from Rockfalls High School in 1944.

After graduation, she moved to Waterloo, where she worked at Black’s Clothing and Rath Packing.

While working in Waterloo, Marvel met Vern Wagner. They were united in marriage in Mason City in December 1947. To their union five children were born.

The couple then moved to West Union, where Vern farmed and Marvel was a homemaker.

After Vern’s death in 1970, Marvel continued to live on the farm, and she began a career at Palmer Memorial Hospital in West Union, starting as a cook and working her way up to dietitian supervisor. She was well-known for her pie, potato salad, and other flavorful foods.

After her retirement from the hospital, Marvel helped operate The Back Door, a small cafe in Clermont, until it closed.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in West Union. She enjoyed donating her time to the church, as well as to West Union Community Library.

Marvel was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Union Study Club, and the Clermont Business and Professional Women.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidering and flowers. She loved to go to social events, especially card club and the 183rd Ordinance Division Reunion, which was a annual gathering that Vern and Marvel initiated that reunited Vern’s World War II division.

Marvel is survived by her five children, Paul (Gloria) Wagner of West Union, Rodney (Diane) Wagner of Clermont, Meredith (Dan Binks) Wolfe of Center Point, Merry (Jim) Steinlage of Hawkeye, and William (Kathy) Wagner of Elgin; two brothers, Clair C. (Dorothy) Hoblit and John A. (Linda) Hoblit; a sister, Audrey L. (Art) Johnson; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
