Services held Friday for W.U. native

Gerald D. Schroyer, 88, of Harrold, S.D., formerly of Arlington and West Union, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, S.D. 

Funeral services were held Friday, March 15, at Wadena Community Church in Wadena with Pastor Rusty Phillips officiating. 

Burial was in the Wadena Cemetery.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home of Elgin handled the local arrangements.

Gerald Donald “Jerry” Schroyer was born May 24, 1924, in West Union to Otto and Victoria (Stahl) Schroyer.  

He attended school in West Union.  

On Feb. 12, 1942, Jerry enlisted in the United States Army.  He was stationed in Mississippi for his basic training.  He served a tour in the European War Theater and received an honorable discharge on Dec. 22, 1945.

On July 23, 1948, he married Artalee Phillips at the Presbyterian Church in Wadena.  To this union, a son was born. 

The Schroyers lived in the Arlington area, where they raised their son and had a business.

For many years, Jerry operated heavy equipment in road and building construction throughout Iowa.  

He loved and raised horses and participated in Saddle Club activities.  

In 1984, the Schroyers moved to South Dakota near Harrold, and Jerry enjoyed every day, especially working with his friends and neighbors.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ivan in infancy, Robert, and George “Mick”; and a sister, Margaret Peterson.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Artalee Schroyer of Harrold, S.D.; a son, John (Rose) Schroyer of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; a sister, Marie Taylor of Strawberry Point; and a brother, Richard Schroyer of West Union.
