The West Central school board approved two sections of preschool for 3- and 4-year olds for the 2013-14 at Monday’s meeting. A state mandate doesn’t allow for the district to receive funding for the first year, thus requiring fees to be set accordingly to cover the cost of teachers, associates, and supplies.

The state also says that only 20 students may be in a classroom, but approximately 33 families have expressed interest.

“We have made the commitment to have a preschool, so we need to make the commitment to those who are interested,” said K-8 Principal Cathy Timmerman, who recommended opening two sections of preschool.

The board followed Timmerman’s recommendations and approved two sections, which will allow up to 40 students to participate in the four-day-a-week preschool either full or half-days. The fee for the full day (8:15-3:15) preschool was set at $224 per month, with the half-day (8:15-11:15) fee set at $75 per month. Timmerman noted that scholarships for the tuition will also be available.

Packets with more information are ready to distribute to interested families and will need to be returned by Monday, April 1.

See next week’s issue of the Fayette Leader for more on Monday’s school board meeting.
