Bill Schupbach

Former Elgin resident William Junior “Bill” Schupbach, 92, died at his home in Sun Lakes, Ariz., on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013.

A memorial service will be held Friday, March 15, at Chandler United Methodist Church in Chandler, Ariz., with the Rev. Jonathan Arnpriester officiating. 

Inurnment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix. 

Born July 12, 1920, in Elgin, Bill was one of 12 children born to William Henry and Anna Rose (Fredriech) Schupbach. 

He graduated from Elgin High School and later from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, in 1949. 

After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, Bill then went on to teach and coach at Monona and Ackley. He spent the rest of his career as a sales representative for Valeron Corp. in Cedar Rapids, and Tawas City and Farmington Hills in Michigan. 

A man of faith, Bill was a member of Chandler United Methodist Church. He was active in the adult Sunday school class, Wednesday morning Bible study, and the men’s group. He was a Stephen minister as well. 

Family was extremely important to Bill. He discipled and mentored each member of his large extended family and friends.

He was a man who lived life fully and with love for all he met. An environmental pioneer, Bill was passionate about the outdoors. He loved to garden and was a member of the Sun Lakes Garden Club. He was. 

Sports were an important part of Bill’s life, both as a participant and a spectator. He was an avid golfer and bridge player. His love of the Iowa Hawkeyes was unwavering.

He and Jan also enjoyed traveling. 

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Georgene (Drahn); seven brothers; four sisters; and a son-in-law, Cass Pic.  

He is survived by Jan (Beeman), his wife of 62 years; six daughters, Marsha (Tim) Lowe of Iowa City; Karen Pic of Chesterfield, Mo.; Juli (Bob) Goerend of Crystal, Minn., Valerie (Jeff) of Eugene, Ore., Pamela Calhoun  of Sun Lakes, Ariz., and Jody (Steve) Bogoshian  of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a grandson Marc (Doreen) Lowe (Donovan and Colleen); a granddaughter, Carrie (Dave) McGuire (Clare); a grandson Chris (Annette) Pic (Andrew, Rachel, Rebeca, and David); a granddaughter Erin (Eric) Crim (Curtis, Caila, and Coen); granddaughter Jolene Goerend (Shelley Abadi); grandson Russell (Becky) Goerend (Henry);grandson Jeffrey, granddaughter Jessica and Joevan (Joe’Mari), granddaughter Alexandria and Markus (Paityn), grandson Willy; grandson Kelley, granddaughter Katie; grandsons Steven, Zachary, and Matthew.
