Memorial service held for Waucoma man

Howard G. Adams, 88, of Waucoma died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner. 

A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 9, at St. John Lutheran Church (Stapleton), rural Waucoma. 

Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner was in charge of arrangements.

Howard Gordon Adams, son of John and Dorothy (Van Brocklin) Adams, was born Nov. 23, 1924, in Fayette County. 

He graduated from Waucoma High School in 1941. Howard then attended Luther and Upper Iowa College for a year and a half prior to joining the U.S. Army in July 1944; he served as a medical technician in the service for two years. 

Upon his discharge, Howard returned home to farm, and he worked at Deere & Company for 23 years. 

In 1976, he married Evelyn Blue.

Howard enjoyed vacations with Evelyn and children Tammy and Pete and had a trailer at the river for 23 years. His life was his family.

Five years ago Howard had a bad stroke, which slowed him down, but he continued to enjoy church, spending time with his family, and attending school functions with grandkids. 

Howard was a member of the Jolly Old-Timers. He did woodworking as a hobby and could fix anything. He was also a dedicated Chicago Cubs fan.  

In addition to teaching Sunday school for many years, Howard was a longtime member of the Waucoma American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Buck Fisher; and four sisters-in-law, Delma Knox, Jeanne Boeckman, Kathy Adams, and Betty Northrop.

Howard is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Waucoma; a daughter, Tammy (Kevin) Winter of Waucoma; a son, Pete (Sue) Blue of Fredericksburg; four grandchildren, Joel (Darcy) Martin, and Randee, Shelbee, and Tanner Winter; and a great-grandson.

Also surviving are a sister, Dorothy Ruth Fisher of Janesville; a brother, Freeman Adams of Waucoma; four brothers-in-law, Ernie (Marty) Northrop of Sumner, Kenny (Leslie) Northrop of Floyd, James Boeckman of Readlyn, and Ralph Adams of Waucoma; two sisters-in-law, LeeAnn (Al) Blue of Waucoma and Marlys (Mike) Harmening of Ionia; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
