Services held for Janette Roys of Volga

Janette Roys, 66, of Volga died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 26, at Grace Evangelical Free Church, Elkader, with Pastor Jeremy Sarver officiating.

Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery in Volga. Casket bearers were Kenny Roys, Clyde Bloyer, Bob Roys, Larry Jellings, Steve Roys, and Brian Hamrin.

Arrangements were handled by Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader.

Janette Roys was born in Oelwein on June 9, 1946, to J. Walter and Doris (Probert) Roys of rural Volga, joining four brothers and three sisters.

She grew up on the family farm west of Volga. She graduated in 1964 from Central High School in Elkader.

After a year of working in Denver, Colo., Jan returned home to attend Dubuque University, earning her degree in history and social studies in 1969.

She then returned to Denver to work for a construction firm for five years.

Jan later taught two years in a private school near Potomac, Ill.  From 1977 to 1980, she taught business education to missionary children in Tokyo, Japan.

She decided to pursue more biblical education, so she attended Denver Seminary for two years.

In 1985, Jan went to work for World Venture in Wheaton, Ill., where she helped short-term missionaries prepare for the field. During this time, she felt a call on her life to join the mission team in Macau.

On Jan. 27, 1993, Jan was appointed as a missionary to Macau. After studying the Mandarin language for two years, she entered the field as an administrator, eventually moving into a position of evangelism and discipleship among university students. Jan retired from the mission field in August 2012 and returned to Volga, where she was ready to serve the community as well as continue relationships she left in Macau.

However, on Oct. 23, 2012, it was discovered that Jan had pancreatic cancer.  Though the diagnosis was sudden and tragic, Jan continued to care for others both physically and spiritually.

Preceding her in death were her parents and three brothers, John, Kenneth and Lyle.

Jan is survived by a brother, Bill (Andrea) Roys of Wadena; three sisters, Jean (Glen) Bloyer, of Winfield, Kan., Barbara (Gary) Jellings of Volga, and Ruth Anne (Jon) Hamrin of Bloomington, Ill.; sister-in-laws Corrine Roys of Elkader, Nathalie Monger of Loveland, Colo., Georgia Roys of Hereford, Ariz., Sandra Roys of Ames; and 38 nieces, nephews, and their families.
