Mass of Christian Burial celebrated in Clermont

A Mass of Christian Burial for Eunice M. Bushman, 77, of Clermont was celebrated Friday, Feb. 1, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Clermont. The Rev. Dale Rausch was the Mass celebrant.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Clermont, handled the arrangements.

Eunice’s death occurred Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society – Waukon.

Eunice Mathilda (Huinker) Bushman, daughter of William T. and Ida (Einck) Huinker, was born at home in rural Ossian on March 23, 1935. 

She graduated from St. Francis DeSales School in Ossian in 1952 and later in her life graduated from the clerical program at Area One Vocational-Technical School (Northeast Iowa Community College) in Calmar. 

Prior to her marriage, Eunice worked at a grocery store in Ossian. 

On Aug. 10, 1954, Eunice was united in marriage with Darrel Bushman at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, Ossian. To this union six children were born. 

The couple farmed together and raised their family near Castalia. In 1986, Eunice and Darrel retired from the farm and moved into Clermont. There, they operated a bed and breakfast for several years and developed the Oak Ridge Heights housing addition in Clermont.

Eunice was very active in her church and in the community. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Rosary Society, the Clermont Community Club, and Business and Professional Women. In 1990 she was nominated by the community as an Iowa Merit Mother. 

Eunice enjoyed working in her yard, crocheting, entertaining her grandchildren, enjoyed spending time with her coffee group, reading, dancing with Darrel, and traveling.

In 2009 she became a resident of Garden View Senior Living Community, Monona. In October 2012, because of declining health, she moved to Good Samaritan Society – Waukon. 

Eunice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Darrel, who died Nov. 26, 2009; a great-grandson, Andrew Helgerson; three brothers, Ralph, Charles, and Donald; and five sisters, Alice, Lillian, Luella, Florence, and Ida.

Survivors include her children, Cindy (Mike) Gibbs of Waterville, Wendy (Kevin) Helgerson of Decorah, Scott Bushman of Clermont, Chuck (Marlys) Bushman of Castalia, DeeAnn (Wayne) McGlaughlin of Monona, and Karla (Dennis) Niemann of Yelm, Wash.; 27 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Additional survivors include two brothers, William (Phyllis) Huinker of Postville and Tom (Joyce) Huinker of Festina; three sisters, Catherine Moellers of Cresco, Grace Reicks of New Hampton, and Joann (Francis) Wenthold of Ossian; a brother-in-law, Alex Reicks of Lawler; and a sister-in-law, Edna Huinker of Ossian.
