Elgin native Edith Gehring Bryant dies Jan. 26

 

Edith V. Bryant, M.D., 75, of Coralville died at Lantern Park Nursing Home on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.

No services are being held at this time, but an informal gathering will be held this summer in Elgin.
Cedar Memorial Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family.

Edith V. (Gehring) Bryant was born Aug. 25, 1937, on a farm near Elgin to Lawrence and Edna (Brackin) Gehring.

She attended grade school in rural Pleasant Valley Township and at Elgin High School. 

Edith was baptized into the Catholic faith by Monsignor Conway on Feb. 15, 1958, through the Newman Center, St. Thomas More Church in Iowa City. 

She graduated from University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City in 1961. Edith completed her internship at Cincinnati General Hospital in Ohio. She was a resident and fellow in psychiatry at Georgetown Medical Center in Washington, D.C.  Edith worked 22 years at Washington, D.C., area hospitals, including D.C. General Hospital and Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

She married Leo Bryant Jr. on Dec. 20, 1975, in Washington, D.C.

In 1984 Edith moved back to Iowa, where she worked in several community health clinics and care facilities in Fayette, Winneshiek and Allamakee counties.

She was a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites in Washington, D.C., and in Iowa. She was also a member of the Rosary Society, as well as many professional organizations.

Edith enjoyed art, poetry, all kinds of music, sports, and reading about saints.

Her last 15 years were spent in and out of various care facilities.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo Bryant Jr.; siblings Lawrence (Shirley) Gehring Jr. and Grace (Thomas) Meighan.

Survivors include her siblings Norma R. Gehring and Janet Luise (Tom Hickey) of Iowa City; Joyce (Jack) Van Sickel of Phoenix AZ, Gerald (Marilyn) Gehring of Des Moines; three sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews. 

Edith’s causes were always the poor, the sick, and the disenfranchised.  There is no memorial fund for Edith, but making a donation of time or money to any like organization in your area would be appreciated by the family.
