Messiah will celebrate 80 years in WU; long-time singer reflects on her experience

In 1941, school teachers Janet Bierce and Jean Foley were discussing how West Union’s adult community was missing cultural advantages. Mrs. D. L. (Marie) Wood was new to the community when she was approached with the idea of creating a chorus that would enhance, not encroach upon, the religious atmosphere of Christmas. To make it a truly community affair, it was felt that the chorus shouldn’t be held under the auspices of the school, nor should it be confined to any particular church.

Now, 80 years later, Handel’s “Messiah” is still being performed during the holiday season in West Union.

The project actually began a year ago September, in 2020. In front, from left: Marty Ungerer, Russ Kocher, Annagene Ungerer, Ryan and DeAnn Loeb, and Tyler Loeb. In back, are Marty Ungerer and his daughter, Tiffany Ungerer.

On Easter Sunday 2021, Dale Ungerer left this earthly world. Yet the family he left behind continues to feel his presence as they work together on a project that would have him grinning ear to ear if he could see it now.

They’ve dubbed the project, “Ungerer Centennial Barn of Memories,” and that title couldn’t be more fitting.
