SW girls win season opener, fall to Clayton Ridge

The Warrior girls got their season underway last week, winning it’s season opener over North Butler before falling to Clayton Ridge the following night.

Mildred Lyons, age 96 of Ossian, died on Thursday, November 25, 2021. Memorial Service will be held Friday, December 3, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Presbyterian Church, 208 North Vine St., West Union, IA.  Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at the Wild Woods Event Center, 110 W Main ST, Ossian, IA and also after 10 a.m. at the West Union Church on Friday morning.

Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Home tours featured at DeSales Magic of Christmas

 

 

Tickets are now on sale for the 2021 Magic of Christmas at the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club on Dec. 3 – 5. The home tours, a unique feature of The Magic of Christmas, are being decorated for the holiday season. The home tours are Saturday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the home tours. 

A raffle will be part of the weekend activities. Raffle items include holiday decorations, a Christmas canvas print, a holiday angel statue and many more items.  Tickets for a special raffle item, a handmade queen-size quilt designed and sewn by Margaret Elsbernd, will be on sale prior to and throughout the event.

Christmas in Calmar is Thursday

 

 

Christmas in Calmar is back for 2021! This year’s celebration will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, in downtown Calmar.

Photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be under the tent (be sure to bring your cameras). A live nativity by local CFSR students will also be on display in the window at Gundersen Clinic.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, Dec. 4, when Santa Claus will be coming to Ossian! He will be arriving at Wild Woods Event Center at 11 a.m. and will be there until 1 p.m.

The appearance is part of the Craft/Vendor Show at the event center, which will feature 15 different vendors. The event will begin at 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Local Boy Scouts will be serving lunch as well.

Ellen Halverson

Ellen Halverson

 

Ellen Irene Halverson, 86, of Elgin, formerly of West Union passed away, Wednesday, November 24, 2021at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital surrounded by loving family.

She was born March 24, 1935, to Eugene Ruben Nutting and Gladys Wilma Baldwin Nutting at their home rural route Wadena. Sometime later they moved to a farm near Brainard where Ellen attended school until the eighth grade. At an early age she began helping her father on the farm, babysitting, and cleaning homes.

On August 28, 1953 at the age of eighteen, Ellen accepted Christ as her personal savior while attending Gospel meetings held by Henry Wah ls and William Warke.  Ellen married Kenneth Halverson on Dec. 3, 1955. To this union one daughter, Deborah Jean was born. Her first job in 1956 was at Elscheimers, then Tony's sandwich division of Schwans, Atwood and she retired from H & H Food Service.

Paul Bemiss

Paul Bemiss

 

Paul Bemiss, 71, passed away Saturday, November 20, 2021 in Spring Hill, FL after a sudden illness. 

He was born on December 17, 1949 to Robert and Frances Halverson Bemiss in West Union, Iowa.  He attended North High School and graduated on May 26, 1968.  After graduation he attended NIACC in Mason City and graduated with an Associate Degree in Business in 1970.  He moved back to West Union and was employed by John Havener pharmacy and was also employed by H & H Distributing.  In 1971 after his parents passed away, he owned Bemiss Distributing with his brother Gary until they sold it in June of 2020.  Paul had one son, Robert Michael and he was the joy in his life. He also loved his nieces and nephews and then his great-nieces and nephews.  He was a wonderful father and uncle. 

Paul was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church and he was baptized on January 9, 1950 and confirmed in May of 1963.

Nancy Heller

Nancy Heller

 

Nancy Josephine Heller, 85, of Clermont, Iowa died Saturday, November 20, 2021 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Nancy Josephine was born August 3, 1936 to George and Matilda (Schmelzer) Pape in West Union, Iowa. She graduated from Clermont High School and went to work as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell in West Union, Iowa.

Nancy was united in marriage with Elmer Heller on July 22, 1956 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clermont, Iowa. They lived and raised their family in Washburn, Iowa. As well as being a homemaker, Nancy worked at Kmart in Waterloo until her retirement in 2001. She enjoyed reading, gardening, baking and canning. Nancy loved spending time at the “Old House”, spoiling her animals and baking the best apple pies. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
