The South Winn girls’ wrestlers got their first action of the season on Friday night in Decorah as all three Warriors earned a win in the tournament.

Senior Kaydn Meyer took first place in the 125-129 pound weight class, pinning all three of her opponents.

The Warrior wrestling team competed at the Chris Davis Invitational at Wapsie Valley on Saturday, taking fourth place with 108 team points.

South Winn was lead by four medal winners on the day, including 195-pounder Tony Greve who went 3-0 on the day and claimed first play. Greve had a pin and a pair of decisions.

Mildred Lyons, age 96, of Ossian, IA died on Thursday, November 25, 2021 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.  

Memorial Service was held on Friday, December 3, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethel Presbyterian Church, 208 North Vine St, in West Union, IA with Rev. Don Best and Rev. Terry Landsgaard presiding.

Visitation was from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at the Wild Woods Event Center, 110 W. Main St., in Ossian, IA and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church in West Union on Friday morning.  The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mildred Lucille (Miller) Lyons was born on April 21, 1925 to Christian and Gertrude (Hill) Miller in Alexander, IA.  She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at the Methodist Church in Clarion, IA.  Mildred graduated from Clarion High School in 1944.

Drive-thru Santa on the Farm is Friday

Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be visiting Iowa’s Dairy Center on Friday night. The drive-thru Santa on the Farm event will allow visitors to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus from their vehicle, as well as to see a close-up view of the milking cows. (submitted photo)

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be coming to town, or should we say to the farm! A Drive-Thru Santa on the Farm event will be held at Iowa’s Dairy Center on Friday evening, Dec. 10 from 5-7 p.m. Iowa’s Dairy Center is located at 1527 Hwy. 150, Calmar.

Albert Butikofer

Albert Butikofer

 

Albert Allen Butikofer, age 92, died November 29, 2021, at the Gundersen Palmer Hospital in West Union, IA.  Albert was born to Marie (Schupbach) and Albert Butikofer, Sr. on October 28, 1929.  He attended the Cheery Valley country school.  On April 2, 1950, he was baptized and joined the Apostolic Christian Church, where he served as a song leader for many years.  In 1951-52, Albert and his brother Bert served their country together in Korea as non-combatants in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  

     Albert married LaVerne Ida Fischer (Roanoke, IL) on August 7, 1966.  They farmed together on the Butikofer home place southeast of Elgin, IA for 33 years, producing crops, livestock, and honey.  In May of 2000, they moved to Elgin and lived there until moving to Copper Creek Senior Living in January of 2021. Albert will be remembered for his wit and strong convictions, both of which he retained to the very end.

Steven Henry Peterson, 71, of West Union, Iowa died Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at Gundersen Palmer Hospital, West Union, Iowa 52175.

Steven Henry Peterson was born on May 15, 1950, to Henry and Sylvia (Rogness) Peterson in West Union, Iowa.  He attended country school until the 8th grade and graduated from North High School in 1968. 

In 1970, he was drafted into the Army and spent two years in Heidelberg, Germany. Steve was honorably discharged in 1972 and returned home where he joined his father on the family farm where they milked cows and grew crops.  In 1979, his parents moved to town and he purchased the farm from them and continued farming.

Donald Dean Webster, 71, of Elgin, Iowa died Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Donald was born April 1, 1950 to Robert and Tillie (Kubik) Webster in Cresco, Iowa. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1969 and attended Area One in Calmar for Autobody. Don proudly joined and served in the United States Army, serving in Viet Nam.

Don was united in marriage with Karen Landswerk. Three sons were born to this union. They later divorced. Throughout the years, Don worked for P & H Harnischfeger Cranes in Cedar Rapids, painted water towers and Eglin’s Auto Body and owned and operator of Elgin Tap for fifteen years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Ellen Halverson

Ellen Halverson

 

Ellen Irene Halverson, 86, of Elgin, formerly of West Union passed away, Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital surrounded by loving family.

She was born March 24, 1935, to Eugene Ruben Nutting and Gladys Wilma Baldwin Nutting at their home rural route Wadena. Sometime later they moved to a farm near Brainard where Ellen attended school until the eighth grade. At an early age she began helping her father on the farm, babysitting, and cleaning homes. 

On August 28, 1953 at the age of eighteen, Ellen accepted Christ as her personal savior while attending Gospel meetings held by Henry Wah ls and William Warke.  Ellen married Kenneth Halverson on Dec. 3, 1955. To this union one daughter, Deborah Jean was born. Her first job in 1956 was at Elscheimers, then Tony’s sandwich division of Schwans, Atwood and she retired from H & H Food Service.

The West Central GBB season continued last week as the Lady Blue Devils picked up their first win of the season on Friday night.
