From tragedy comes triumph: WU woman gets gift of life from organ donor

Andy Pavlovec is remembered by his parents, Dan and Vicki, who hold his picture and his handprint that was taken while he was on life support following the accident that took his life. He is also remembered by Ruth Medberry (standing) who received one of Andy’s kidneys after his death. (Jack Swanson photo)

From tragedy comes triumph: WU woman gets gift of life from organ donor

It’s hard to know that your happiness can mean sorrow for someone else. It’s hard to know that your joy means pain for another. It’s hard to know that the greatest gift that anyone could have ever given you came at the cost of another human being.

For Ruth Medberry, these feelings are hard to deal with. The West Union woman was given a new kidney recently that most likely saved her life. The kidney came from a man who was just getting started in life. He was in peak physical condition. He had two young sons he loved and adored and spent as much time as he could with. He cared about preserving the planet and took active steps to help do that. He cared about family, and family cared about him. Maybe most of all he cared about others, and what he could do to help them. In the end, that caring, gave several people new lives and improved the lives of possibly a hundred or more, but it came at a heavy cost, the loss of his own life.

The South Winneshiek Invitational was the place to be on Saturday. The annual tournament featured both the 2021 Class 2A champions (West Delaware) and runners-up (Osage), as well as six other top area teams.

“We only wrestled 11 guys (out of 14) and finished just a few points out of the top four,” said Warrior coach Jake Elsbernd, who’s team scored 98 points. “Ethan Timp was able to get to the finals for the second straight week, but this time he came out as the champion. He put together a couple of really good matches and he is starting to really put himself in some good positions on the mat. He is wrestling smart and not taking any unnecessary risks.”

It was a tough week for the SW boys’ basketball team as the Warriors dropped a pair of games to two high-quality area teams.

MFL/MarMac

South Winn started the week Tuesday, Dec. 7, against UIC rival MFL/MarMac.

“This was a tough game to lose,” said coach Derek Taylor, who’s team fell, 57-54, to the Bulldogs. “We started the game really slow, bout thought we played well from the second quarter until the 4-minute mark in the fourth, where we had the ball and up 10 points.”
