The Warrior wrestling team hit the mat for the final time in 2021 last week as they picked up a pair of hard-fought wins across the state border.

South Winn took on Waukon and host Fillmore Central (Minnesota) on Tuesday night, Dec. 21.

The South Winn girls’ basketball squad dropped it’s final two games before the holiday break as it lost a non-conference game to Clarksville and fell to UIC rival Turkey Valley last week.

Warrior boys take down rival Turkey Valley

 

 

The Warrior boys’ basketball team closed out the 2021 portion of its schedule with a bang by defeating longtime rival Turkey Valley, 51-38.

“Love the atmosphere for rivalry games, no matter what the record going in. This is always a hard-played game,” said SW coach Derek Taylor after the victory, which gave the Warriors a 6-2 record going into the holiday break.

Finalists named for NICC presidency

 

 

The Northeast Iowa Community College Board of Trustees approved The President Search Committee’s recommendation of four finalist candidates for the position of college president, at its meeting on Dec. 20.

Finalists selected are:

Dr. Mark Curtis-Chavez

Dr. Curtis-Chávez currently serves as the Provost of the College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Ill. Curtis-Chávez earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Toledo, an M.A. in English from Northern Illinois University and a B.A. in English from Indiana University.

Dr. Joe DeHart

Dr. DeHart currently serves as provost of the Des Moines Area Community College Newton campus. DeHart earned a Ph.D. and M.S. in Educational Leadership from Iowa State University and B.S. in General Science from the University of Iowa.

According to the 2021 Farmland Value Survey by Iowa State University, numbers are soaring. The value of all Iowa farmland increased by an astonishing 29 percent to an average of $9,751 per acre. The increase amounts to $2,193 per acre.

Gaylord Converse

Gaylord Fred Converse was born on July 13, 1946, at Waterloo, IA.  He died at the age of 75 on December 25, 2021.  He was the son of Nelson Forrest and Juliette Rose (Heisler) Converse.   He was baptized at the Frederika Methodist Church.  

He and his family moved several times in his youth as they rented farms in Iowa and his father’s birthplace in Illinois.  When Gaylord was in fifth grade, the family purchased their family farm in rural Sumner.  Gaylord was confirmed at the Sumner Methodist Church and graduated from Sumner High School in 1965.  He was co-captain of his football team and received all-conference honors.  He sang in the All-State Chorus and was also chosen as the national soloist at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City.

Rosella Boleyn

 

Rosella Ann Boleyn, 91, of Elgin, Iowa died Monday, December 27, 2021 at Gundersen Palmer Hospital, West Union, Iowa.

She was born on February 5, 1930 to Woodford and Elsie Mae (Harris) Craig in Grundy Center, Iowa. She attended Beaman High School, Beaman, Iowa.

Rosella was united in marriage with Robert Boleyn on April 17, 1949 at the First Baptist Church, Elgin, Iowa. Four children were born to this union, Cindy, Craig, Cary and Shelli. Rosella worked at
Palmer Hospital as a dietician/cook, she also worked at Iowa Turkey Products. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the First Baptist Church, Elgin, Iowa. Rosella enjoyed reading books, playing cards, dancing and singing with family and at church. She also volunteered at the nursing home and her and Bob would put on a “once a year” fish fry.

A.W. Martin, 95, of Fayette, died Saturday, December 25, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, services will be held at a later date. Service date and time will be posted once they become available.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in A.W.’s name to the Salvation Army or a charity of the donor’s choice. Becker & Son Funeral Home in Fayette is assisting A.W.’s family.

Eldon Ingamells, 87, of Stanley passed away Tuesday December 21, 2021.  Visitation was from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at the Geilenfeld-Buehner Funeral Home in Oelwein, with Masonic services beginning at 6:00 p.m. by the Hebron Masonic Lodge of Oelwein.  Funeral services began at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 27, 2021 at the Stanley Union Church in Stanley with Pastor Phil Rownd officiating.  Interment was in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens at Hazleton.  Memorials wmay be directed to the Stanley Union Church and Camp Courageous.  www.geilenfeldfh.com.

Wilma Cline

Wilma Cline

 

Wilma Mae Martin Cline was born on December 21, 1931 in Clermont, Iowa. Wilma passed peacefully unexpectedly at her home surrounded by her family on December 21, 2021. 

She was baptized in 1932 and confirmed in 1946 at East Clermont Lutheran Church. She attended Sunday School for 12 years and never missed a day. She received pins for perfect attendance. Wilma attended Clayton County Rural Schools and graduated from West Union High School in 1950. She loved attending her high school class reunions.

She was the daughter of Willard McKinley Martin and Marie Ellen Bertina Johnson Mosby Martin. 

Wilma was a Nurse Aid at Palmer Memorial Hospital in West Union in 1951 to 1953.

She married James “Jim” Cline at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 31, 1953. To this union, eight children were born.
