The way Dirk Torkelson tells it, it was 1926 when Torkelson Motors started doing auto body repair at their car dealership in Elgin. The business itself had started about nine years before that in 1917.

“I remember when I was just a little kid, back in the early 60s, and there was a big deal made about new renovations for the body shop,” recalled the present owner of the dealership, once owned by his father.

Those same feelings, but more intense and with more pride, are coming back to Dirk today as he stands in the new body shop with it’s state of the art paint booth and totally upgraded features.

The North Fayette Valley High School Marching Band made history over the weekend when it earned a Division I rating at the Iowa High School Music Association State Marching Band Festival.

“I'm incredibly proud of the kids who performed on Saturday and those who were with us when we started this process five years ago,” said band instructor Ted Schacherer.

The Iowa High School Music Association holds its annual state marching band festival over the course of two Saturdays in October. There are eight sites across the state that hold this festival; four in the North on the first Saturday, Oct. 9, and four in the South on the second Saturday, Oct. 16. North Fayette Valley attended the West Waterloo High School site, where a total of 17 schools performed. NFV was the only 2A division school out of four schools to receive a I rating.
