Playwright asking public's help in downtown presentation

Playwright Janet Schlapkohl is hoping to recreate a scene similar to this one when she presents her play “Godiva for Suffrage,” Saturday, Aug. 14, on the Court House Square in West Union. She is asking for community participation in the play.

It may be a year late but that doesn’t mean the message is any less important.

That’s according to playwright Janet Story Schlapkohl who will present her play “Godiva for Suffrage”, Saturday, Aug. 14, on the Court House Square in West Union.

Last year was the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage.

“There wasn't a possibility of having it (the play) last year due to Covid. Women were denied their rights as citizens for long enough, a celebration of those rights may be delayed, but not denied,” said the playwright who kept her idea for the play alive throughout the year. Jill Bowden Blank is a co-author.

She went on to talk about the play that will feature audience participation.

Saved from drowning

A near drowning hasn’t kept Morgen Clark, left, for helping out at the sweet corn stand outside of Hawkeye that his grandparents Judi and Dennis Walvatne operate. He was found unresponsive at the bottom of the West Union Pool on Monday, July 19, but now he’s back selling sweet corn with his siblings Justin and Leah Clark. There parents are Greg and Jeana Clark of Pella. (Submitted photo)

“We’re very fortunate we have him here!”

That’s what grandmother Judi Walvatne of Hawkeye said about her grandson, Morgen Clark, following his near death drowning experience.

On Monday, July 19, Morgen, 16, the son of Greg and Jeana Clark of Pella, was swimming at the West Union Aquatic Center. Judi had dropped her visiting grandson off a few minutes earlier. The pool had been cleared for a safety check and that’s when Morgen was spotted at the bottom of the pool.

“If you build it, he will come.” From the movie “Field of Dreams,” it is undoubtedly one of the most iconic movie lines of all time. For Ossian native Isaiah Lienau, he is one of the people responsible for building it – the field that will be the site of Major League Baseball’s Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, that is.

“It was quite the surprise when I found out that I was assigned the project,” said Lienau, an account manager for MLB’s field consultant, Brightview Landscapes. “Before it was officially announced in 2019, there were a lot of rumors going around about the idea of playing a game at the Field of Dreams, which got my attention. When it was made official, I very eagerly volunteered for the project.”
