The last of eight live summer performances at the Ossian Educational and Performance Pavilion will take place on Wednesday, August 18, at 7:30 p.m. The Old Time Community Band will be featured for this live performance. The performance is sponsored by Becker Hardware.

The upcoming November 2 election will have four local South Winneshiek Community School District board seats up for election. The seats include those of Craig Neuzil (at large) to fill a two-year term, Wendy Mihm-Herold (District 1 – four-year term), Don Schroeder (District 2 – four-year term), and Patricia Schissel (District 3 – four-year term).

All incumbents have taken out papers to run. Anyone interested in running for any of the positions may pick up papers from Kris Smith in the South Winneshiek District Office in Calmar. Nomination papers can be submitted to Smith, the board secretary, no sooner than Monday, Aug. 23, and no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16.

Arthur Eckheart

 

Arthur George “Art” Eckheart was blessed with his final wish to pass away peacefully in the house where he was born.  He joined his Lord and family in heaven on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at the age of 74 years.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 19, 2021, at St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington, with Pastor  Clark Baldwin officiating.

Visitation is from  3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Arlington, and for one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.   Interment will be at Reed Cemetery, rural Arlington, Iowa. Lynn E. Kerker, age 97, of Dubuque, IA, formerly of East Dubquue, IL, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2021, surrounded by her family.  She was born in Millboro, South Dakota to Guy and Alice (Dick) Clover. Her family moved to Council Bluffs when she was a baby. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. She married her first love, Earl J. Kerker, in Hiawatha, Kansas on November 23, 1946. Their first date was the day before he left for the Army, and they wrote letters for three years during the war.

Her first job was with Guarantee Mutual Life Co. in Omaha, where she was studying to be a Life Office Management Associate.

Catherine “Cathy” Irene Bemiss, 75, of West Union, Iowa died Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Stoney Brook Village, West Union.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 4-7 p.m. at Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, West Union, Iowa with a one our visitation before services at the church on Friday.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 20, 2021 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, West Union, Iowa with Rev. Don Best as the Officiant.

Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.

Joy Eischeid

 

Joy Eischeid (Garvin), 79, passed away peacefully due to complications of heart arrhythmia and heart failure at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids on August 9, 2021. When the Lord called her home, her hands were held by her three daughters and husband of over sixty years. 

Joy was born July 20, 1942 in Waterloo, Iowa, one of six children to parents Jack and Doris (Rowell) Garvin. She was baptized and confirmed at her lifelong church, Bethel Presbyterian. She graduated from North High School in 1960, where she twirled the baton as head majorette, boogied at sock hops, and represented her class at Homecoming all four years. She also met the love of her life, Mike Eischeid, living seven miles south in Fayette. Mike and Joy were married January 28, 1961 and their nearly sixty-one-year love affair would include three daughters - Jennifer, Julie and Kate.

Dixie L. (Traeger) Hennig, 85, of Fayette died Thursday, August 12, 2021, at Corridor Crossing Place in Cedar Rapids.

Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Memorial service at 10:30 Thursday, August 19, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church in Fayette with Rev. Mike Jager officiating. Clarion Everett Johnson, 78, of Eldorado, Iowa died Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at Good Samaritan Society in West Union, Iowa. Clarion was born May 25, 1943, son of Henry and Charlotte Johnson. He attended school at Dover #2 and Dover #3 country schools. He also attended high school at West Union until 1961. Clarion did odd jobs for farmers and worked at Goodwill. He received his GED in 1987. Clarion was a good artist and displayed his pencil drawings at the Fayette County Fair.

Clarion lived in the Eldorado area most of his life until he sold his house and moved to West Union into an apartment. He was a resident of the Good Samaritan Home in West Union for almost ten years.

Preceding Clarion in death were his parents, Henry and Charlotte John; and one brother, David Johnson.

A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
