DiAnn Svenson

 

DiAnn M. Svenson, age 77, of Decorah, IA passed away in her sleep at home on Friday, June 4, 2021. Her final moments were an unexpected yet peaceful clearing following a health challenge storm. 

  A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2021, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Donald Hertges officiating. Inurnment was in St. Benedict Cemetery.  

  Visitation began on Thursday at 9:00 a.m., two hours before the service, at St. Benedict Catholic Church.

 DiAnn Marie (Ehler) Svenson entered life on September 6, 1943, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Felix and Bertha (Wenthold) Ehler. She attended St. Francis - de Sales Catholic Schools in Ossian, Iowa and graduated from de Sales High School with the class of 1961. In addition to her siblings, many of her beloved cousins describe her as the glue that held the Ehler and Wenthold families together.

It was another busy week at the ballpark for the South Winn baseball team, which went 4-1 last week with its only loss coming at the hands of No. 1-ranked Mason City Newman.

The week began on Tuesday evening (June 8) in Calmar as the top ranked (Class 1A) Mason City Newman Knights came to town.

The South Winn softball team had another stellar week, going 4-3 overall and 2-0 in UIC play to remain perfect in the conference.

On Tuesday night, June 8, the Warriors traveled to Nashua-Plainfield and beat the Huskies, 13-7.

The Warriors trailed early, but were able to come through with a 10-run seventh inning to secure the victory.

If you’ve been to the Winneshiek County fairgrounds in Decorah recently, you likely noticed some big changes. Last fall, work began on tearing down several of the older, out-dated buildings on the grounds and now, construction crews are working diligently to finish the new Community Building.

The 2021 Summer Performances at the Pavilion in Ossian start tonight, Wednesday, June 16.

The performances include six movie nights and eight live performances. All of the 2021 Summer Performances at the Pavilion are free. The public is invited to bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the event on the lawn at Carey's Park in Ossian. 

 The 2021 Summer Performances at the Pavilion includes movies and live performances during the months of June, July and August. The Ossian Educational and Performance Pavilion features a state of the art sound system, a large movie screen and recessed lighting. All of the movies and live performances have been supported and sponsored by local business and individuals from the Ossian area. We would not be able to support these movies and live performances without the support of the sponsors.

John C. Pleis, 95, of Fayette, Iowa, died Saturday morning, June 12, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 2021, at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington, Iowa with Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating

Visitation: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Arlington and for one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Interment: 2 p.m. Thursday at the Allison Cemetery in Allison, Iowa with military honors.

Memorials may be directed in his name to St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington.

Arliss (Brandt) Grimes, 98, of West Union passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

A Celebration of Life for Arliss Brandt Grimes will be held Saturday, June 19, 2021, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the S. K. Rogers Funeral Home, 120 S. Main Street, Fayette, Iowa.

Arliss passed away on February 11, 2021. Her children and grandchildren would enjoy sharing memories during this open house with family and friends. We won’t play cards or assemble a jigsaw puzzle, but we will share in the joy of her life. Please join us.

Arliss was born in Postville, Iowa on March 16, 1922 to Melvin and Mabel (Dow) Brandt. She was united in marriage to Harry Grimes Jr. in June 1940 at the Little Brown Church. Six children were born to this union.

Sylvan Torkelson

 

Sylvan Torkelson, 93, of Elgin, Iowa died Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at his home. He was born March 7, 1928 to William and Luella (Benson) Torkelson in a log cabin not far from the Highland Church. His mother died when he was 7 years old and Sylvan lived with his Uncle Oscar’s family, that gave him a life-long second family bond. About a year later, his father remarried and he was raised by Elsie and his father.
