Elgin City Clerk terminated

 After a closed session to evaluate employee performance during Monday night’s Elgin City Council meeting it was announced that Rhonda Dales had been terminated from her position as Elgin city clerk. No comment was given by the Council in regard to the reason for the termination and Dales was not available for comment afterwards.

The decision to wear a mask as a protection device against the Covid-19 virus will now be up the individual at the North Fayette School District.

Superintendent Joe Griffith, in the wake of the CDC issuing new mask guidelines allowing for vaccinated individuals not to have to wear masks, says wearing masks at the schools in the District are optional, for staff and students.

The Warrior boys’ golf team wrapped up its 2021 regular season last week, going 1-2 and placing third at the Upper Iowa Conference Meet on Monday.

The week teed off on Monday (May 3) in Calmar as the Warriors fell by only five strokes (186-191) to MFL/MarMac.

It was a busy week for the South Winn girls’ golf team as the Warriors played three times in four days.

The week began Monday (May 3) in Calmar as the Warriors defeated MFL/MarMac, 241-262. South Winn was led by Sydney Becker’s round of 56 – which earned her medalist honors for the meet.

The South Winneshiek boys’ track and field team took care of business Thursday evening at the Upper Iowa Conference meet, taking first with a solid 170 points.

“Before the meet, we talked about being a team that had the ability to score a point in every event,” said coach Scott Conway. “These guys stepped up and did that!”

Marilyn Ruth Breitsprecher, 75, of Ossian, Iowa died on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at her home in Ossian. Marilyn Ruth was born May 18, 1945 to Daniel and Dorothy (Kneeskern) Russett in Decorah, Iowa. She graduated from South Winn High School in 1963.

On June 27, 1964, Marilyn was united in marriage with her high school sweetheart, Gary Breitsprecher. Five children were born to this union. 

Marilyn kept herself busy through the years working side by side on the farm with Gary and sharing her  love of music with many people.  Marilyn taught piano lessons for over 40 years to as many as 30-40 kids per week.  She was also the director of the Ossian Community Singers and loved the time spent with them.  Marilyn enjoyed many Sundays playing the organ at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia as well as teaching the children the Bible.

To qualify for the Upper Explorerland-sponsored program, you must own a house within Ossian city limits and have occupied the home for at least six months. Eligible repairs include exterior improvements (roof, windows, and/or siding) or energy efficiency improvements (insulation, furnaces, hot water heaters, exterior doors, and/or windows).

At the May City Council meeting, a decision to seek an ICAP Grant for the purchase of an IQ1200 Driver Feedback Sign was made.

The Ossian City Council met in regular session Monday, May 3, in a meeting highlighted by the decision to apply for a grant to purchase a speed sign.

The council elected to have City Clerk Ashley Goltz apply for an ICAP (Iowa Communities Assurance Pool) Grant to purchase an IQ1200 Driver Feedback Sign for the community.
