It’s an assignment that’s helping change the world – or at least our little corner of northeast Iowa! With the school year wrapping up this week, eighth grade students at South Winneshiek are making sure they leave a mark when they leave as each member of the class took part in an assignment this spring called “Genius Hour.”

“I always tell my students that they have the power to change the world and that they have important things to say,” said teacher Jessica Peters. “It’s my job to help them find their voices and make sure the adults are listening. I love doing Genius Hour projects with my eighth graders because they are in the driver’s seat and they know they have an opportunity to connect with an authentic audience. It’s an empowering experience and they really do make a difference!”
