While in high school at South Winneshiek, Felicity Taylor made a name for herself in the Iowa wrestling community. Today, her name is one that has become familiar with wrestling fans all over the United States and beyond.

In March, the junior 116-pounder for the McKendree University (Lebanon, Ill.) became the first Iowa female to win a national championship as Taylor capped off an undefeated season by winning the title.

Roger C. Pagel, 71, of Sumner, died Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, April 15, 2021, at Union United Methodist Church, rural Sumner with Rev. Julie Ahrens officiating. The funeral service will be livestreamed on Becker-Milnes & Rettig Facebook Page. Burial will follow at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 14, from 4 to 7 P.M. at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Thursday. On April 8th, 2021, Janet Lee Roberts Nihart, loving wife and mother of one child, passed away at the age of 60 after a seven-year battle with cancer.

  Janet was born February 18th, 1961 in Newton, IA to William and Madonna (Steen) Roberts.  She graduated from Newton High School in 1979, attended college at UNI and finished her education at AIB before joining Huney- Vaughn Court Reporters.  She later worked as an Editorial Assistant at Meredith Corporation and then decided to become a stay-at-home Mom.  Janet married Dean Nihart on 9/12/87 and on 4/27/96 their daughter Amy was born.

Russell (Russ) C. Guyer, 74 of West Union, IA, peacefully departed this life on March 8, 2021, at Mission Regional Medical Center in Mission, Texas. He was born December 29, 1946, to the late Jesse and Opal (Hull) Guyer. He was the youngest of five siblings. He married Carol Welzel and together they had five children: Cheryl, Jay, Linda, Jackie, and Stacy.   

He attended North High School as a freshman and sophomore and received his GED later in life. He received the Rite of Confirmation with St. Olaf Lutheran Church in 1961.

Carter J. Cannon, 18, of Hawkeye, died tragically Saturday, April 3, 2021, rural Sumner, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 16, 2021, at the Arlington Community Event Center with Rev. Ginny Olson officiating. Nancy Menzel

 

Nancy Ann (Krein) Menzel, 76, of Gainesville, FL, passed away in her home on March 24, 2021. She was born to parents Rev. Gideon and Dorothy Krein, on July 12, 1944, in Superior, WI. Nancy went to Monticello High School in Monticello, IA, and then to the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, IA, graduating in 1966.  

Nancy met her husband, Richard (Dick) Menzel, while she was in college and he was at Dubuque Theological Seminary, and they were married on June 30, 1968, in Dubuque, IA. Together they raised two children, Melinda (Mindy) and Matthew (Matt).

The West Central girls’ track team got its season started in spectacular fashion, earning medals in six events Tuesday evening (April 13) at the Postville Lady Pirate Relays.
