Charles Jacobsen

 

Charles {Chuck) Jacobsen, 96, of West Union, Iowa, died Friday, April 9, 2021, at Gundersen Palmer Hospital in West Union, Iowa. Chuck was born at the home farm just outside of West Union, Iowa, on February 11, 1925, to James and Hazel (Musser) Jacobsen. He graduated from West Union High School in 1942 with the honor of being salutatorian of his class. After graduation he farmed with his father on the family farm. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from December 1950 to December 1952.

Janice Smith

Janice Smith

 

Janice Yvonne Smith, 85 of West Union, Iowa passed away on Saturday April 10, 2021. Janice was born on September 1, 1935 to Elmer and Marie (Schultz) Meyer. Janice grew up in the rural Millville area and graduated from the Guttenberg High School. 

Janice is the proud mother of 9 children. In her early years Janice was a farm wife, busy milking cows and raising children. In 1970 Janice received her nursed aide training through Northeast Area One School in Calmar and began a 10-year career at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. Janice also worked at North Star and Atwood in West Union until retiring due to health complications.

Blue Devil athletes took part in the Kee High Invitational on Thursday evening with both squads finishing fourth.

The West Central boys scored 33 points and were led by Creighton Hogue who took first in the 110 hurdles with a time of 18.30. Charlie Sieck earned a pair of silver medals for WC, taking second in the 1600 (5:14.85) and 3200 (11:07.16).

Both the North Fayette Valley girls’ and boys’ golf teams notched wins over Turkey Valley last week as the TigerHawks hosted their Upper Iowa Conference foes on Thursday evening at Pleasant Valley Sports Club in Clermont.

The NFV girls came out on the low end of a 214-249 score as Rayne Everitt earned medalist honors for the meet with a round of 47. Fellow TigerHawk Shae Moncada earned medalist runner-up with a 53.

It was an up and down – or down and up rather – week for the North Fayette Valley boys’ soccer team as the squad dropped its second straight match of the season on Monday night (April 19) to Decorah, but rebounded with a big win over undefeated Postville on Thursday.

North Fayette Valley hosted a track meet on Friday evening as the TigerHawk girls and boys both placed fourth.

“I was impressed with the way our kids performed,” said coach Mark Nuss after the meet. “I believe they are starting to see the big weeks ahead. We had a few events of the girls that we had to pull back – if we didn’t, we may have been close to winning the team title.”

 John and Joann Svendsen of St. Lucas would like to announce the birth or their son, Joseph Victor Svendsen, born at 10:34 a.m. on April 15, 2021.

Joseph Victor weighed 7 pounds and 15 ounces and was 19 and 3/4 inches long.Joseph’s grandparents are Dennis and the late Maxine Boyer of St. Lucas and David and Vicky Svendsen of Castalia and great grandfather Victor Szabo of Castalia.

Joseph was welcomed home by his big brother John and big sister Jenna.

Master Gardeners seeking donations for Floral Hall shelves

“The goal is to bring the inside of the Floral Hall back to the original,” smiled Fayette County Master Gardener, Sue Keunnen.  

“Right now there is nothing to place displays on during the fair, and we want to raise enough money to bring display shelves back to the Floral Hall,” she continued.  “Display shelves that are even better than ever!” 

The Master Gardeners of Fayette County are looking to raise funds to help fund this project.

The North Fayette Valley West Union Elementary will soon be seeing a “spark” of ingenuity added to its newest playground as NFV SPARK students begin building a natural playground to go along with the center’s all inclusive play space that was installed earlier this school year. 

“This project was proposed by the NFV PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) community,” said NFV SPARK student Claire Britt.
