Chips fall into place for Bulldogs at UIC Tourney

“This is the first time I went into the tournament like this with the mindset to let the kids go,” said MFL/MarMac coach Chet Bachman after his team captured the 2021 Upper Iowa Conference Tournament title on Friday night in Elkader. “With the hand we were dealt, having the tournament moved to Friday night (due to a predicted winter storm on Saturday), competing the nigh before, and the overall conditions of our wrestling season (attributed to COVID-19 regulations), I didn’t want to put too much pressure on them and we just let them swing away. They came through and hit a home run!”

The Warrior boys went 2-1 in basketball action last week, picking up wins over West Central and Central. The strong week improved the team to 11-5 (10-3 in UIC) on the season.

Margaret Ann Hanken, 80, of Ossian, Iowa died Wednesday, January 20, 2021at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa. Margaret was born September 26, 1940 to Henry and Margaret (Kleve) Wenthold.  She graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in 1958.

In a story published in the Ossian Bee in 2014, Winneshiek county native Scott Lien and his son, Isaac, were just launching their company, GrandPad. The tablet device, which is designed specifically for use by senior citizens, has been a vital tool for helping keep families connected. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting many families and their ability to visit other members of their family, the importance of GrandPad has grown even more to the point of the company reaching over 1.1 million active users around the world.

It was quite the surprise for students and staff alike at St. Theresa of Calcutta Catholic School on Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 27) as a brand-new book was released during a school assembly in Ossian.

What made this announcement so special is that the authors of the book, titled “What I Loved About 2020,” are the 243 students of the local Catholic school.

Irvin Holder

 

Irvin John Holder, 68, of Hawkeye, Iowa passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He was born June 28, 1952 in West Union to Irvin Sr. and Lucille (Otter) Holder. Irvin attended Holy Name School until May 27, 1966 through the eighth grade and graduated North Fayette High School on May 24, 1970. He helped farmers after school.

 

Irvin proudly served his country in the United States Army from August 1972 to 1974. He was the 1stCav Div and served in Korea for a year. Irvin was united in marriage with Connie Mannion on March 6, 1971 at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. They made their home on the family farm near Hawkeye. In 1974, Irvin went to work for Barker on the grading crew and in 1989 went to work for the Alpha Maintence Shop in Fayette County, where he retired on July 24, 2015.

LeNora Gerene Sawvell was born on September 28th, 1938 in Postville, Iowa to George O. and Nora (Johnson) Larson. She became an angel on January 22, 2021. She was married to the love of her life, Paul R. Sawvell on December 3, 1966 in Vermillion, SD. They had four daughters, Pamela (Paul) Woodson of East Troy, WI, Paula (Chris) Grau of Oakdale, MN, Geri Sawvell of Fayette, IA and Patricia (Dean Hayes) Sawvell of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Alma A. Ameling, 86, of Hawkeye and formerly of St. Lucas, died Saturday, January 30, 2021, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 5, 2021, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will precede the Mass on Friday starting at 9:00 a.m. A Rosary will be recited at 8:45 a.m. at the Church on Friday. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye is assisting Alma’s family. All attending the visitation and Mass are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
