The South Winn wrestling squad competed at their Sectional Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Lake Mills, taking second as a team and sending four individuals on to Districts this weekend.

“These tournaments are always a roller coaster ride with highs and lows,” said coach Jacob Elsbernd after the event. “It is exciting to see some of our kids move on, but also heartbreaking for those who had their season come to an end.”

The South Winneshiek school board decided to continue its Return to Learn plan for at least the next month after discussing the matter at Monday nights meeting.

The board briefly debated keeping its current model for the rest of the school year, which includes full-time in-person classes at the elementary/middle school and an option for in-person full-time, virtual full-time, or a hybrid schedule at the high school. After deliberation, the board decided to continue monitoring the plan on a monthly basis.

Bohr family fights rare genetic disorder together

Bohr family fights rare genetic disorder together

It’s only been a few months since she and her family learned of their rare genetic mutation, but Julie Buddenberg and her four siblings are well on their way toward doing their part to reduce any additional health risks.

“I was diagnosed with CDH1 gene mutation in July (2020). I did genetic testing following my breast cancer diagnosis a year ago,” explained Buddenberg, who lives near Decorah with husband Bruce. “CDH1 is a relatively new find and is similar to the BRCA gene.”

Imelda was born on April 9, 1933 in New Hampton, Iowa. 

She departed this earthly life suddenly on Tuesday, February 2, 2021.

Sunday, February 7, 2021, visitation was observed from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.,  Rosary at 12:30 p.m. and Scripture Service at 3:30 p.m. at the Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home in West Union.  Funeral Mass was held Monday, February 8, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Name Parish in West Union, celebrant Fr. Carl Schmitt.  Internment followed at Mount Calvary Cemetery. 

Imelda was the daughter of William and Rose (Rosonke) Schwickerath. She was united in marriage to Henry Schmitt on May 22, 1956 at the Immaculate Conception Parish, in North Washington, Iowa.

Alma Ameling

 

Alma A. Ameling, 86, of Hawkeye and formerly of St. Lucas, died Saturday, January 30, 2021, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Funeral Mass was held on Friday, February 5, 2021, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. Burial followed at the Church Cemetery. Visitation preceded the Mass on Friday starting at 9 a.m.. A Rosary was recited at 8:45 a.m. at the Church on Friday. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye is assisting Alma’s family. All attending the visitation and Mass are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
