The North Fayette Valley girls looked to avenge one of their two regular season losses on Wednesday night (Feb. 17) as they took on No. 14-ranked Waukon in the Region 5 semifinals.

“I loved our fight, but you have to tip your hat to them,” said coach Jim Calkins after his team’s heart breaking loss to the Indians. They out-positioned us on the glass. We thought we had gotten back into the game with our triangle-two defense, but Waukon made the necessary adjustments in the second half.”

March 11, 1961, is a date that will never be forgotten by many in the Valley community. This year marks the 60-year anniversary of the Valley Tigers girls’ basketball State championship, which was the first and only in the school’s history.

“Back then people didn’t spend much money or go out. There was no social life, but high school sports was something that the community came our and rallied around. Even if they didn’t have kids on the team or in school, everyone was neighbors and would still come out to watch,” recalled West Union’s Pat Kuhens (Larson), who was a First-Team All-State member of the championship team in ’61. “It would be 15 or even 30 years later and people would come up to me and want to talk about basketball. That’s how much the community loved us!”

Fayette County Public Health officials said it probably wouldn’t be until April before residents under the age of 65 start getting the Covid-19 vaccination.

That’s at the current rate of vaccine allotments coming from the State. Public Health Director Jes Wegner told the Fayette County Board of Supervisors, Tuesday, Feb. 16, that they are only getting 300 doses of the vaccine each week.
