First Baby of 2021 at Winneshiek Medical Center

Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah announced last week that baby boy Marcus Wesley Back was the first-born baby of the new year at the facility. He was born on Saturday, Jan. 2, weighing 9 pounds and measuring 21 inches. He is the son of Lauren and Samuel Back of Harmony, Minn., and joins his older brother. (submitted photo)

Fern Kleppe

 

Fern Elizabeth Kleppe, 93, of Elgin, Iowa, died Saturday, January 2, 2021, at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran

Hospital in West Union. She was born March 5, 1927, to Jacob and Ida (Schneider) Friederich Sr. in

Clayton County, Iowa. The family moved to a farm west of Elgin where Fern grew up. She attended

Wander Country School, rural Clermont, through 8th grade. She was baptized and confirmed as an adult

at First Lutheran Church, rural West Union.

 

On July 25, 1946, Fern was united in marriage with Leslie B. Kleppe in Preston, Minnesota. Fern was a

dedicated and caring housewife and farmer. Fern and Leslie operated a dairy farm for many years. Fern

raised the calves from birth, with a special touch. Fern cared for various cats over the years, spoiling her

favorites, Midnight and Lily. She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, baking, refinishing furniture,

Marie Swale

 

Marie Aue Swale, 96, passed away January 3, 2021. 

She was born October 15, 1924 in Washington D.C. to the late Charles and Dorothy Aue. 

She came to Sarasota County in 2014 from West Union, Iowa. 

She had been a member of the United Methodist Church there and also the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. 

Marie had an amazing talent for drawing, loved to bowl setting numerous records and she had a love for auto racing.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Thomas Swale and his wife Stephanie of Sarasota; daughter, daughter-in-law, Janis Swale of West Union, Iowa; and grandson, Ryan Swale of Jesup, Iowa. 

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Julius Jones; second husband, Robert Swale; son, David Swale; and daughter, Judith Jones Vint; and a granddaughter, Wendy Marie Swale.

Interment will be at a family cemetery in Iowa.

August “Augie” D. Bindert, 84, of Hawkeye, died Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Visitation was held from 1  to 4 p.m., Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Inurnment will be held at a later date. August Delmar, son of Fred “Fritz” and Hildegard (Plamp) Bindert was born October 4,1936, in Stickney, South Dakota. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith in South Dakota and later confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Augie received his education in the rural Hawkeye Country Schools and graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1954.

John Hoblit

 

John A Hoblit of West Union died January 1, 2021 at Copper Creek Senior Living Home in West Union. He was born to Ida and Charles Hoblit December 12, 1940, on a farm near Rock Falls, Iowa. He attended school at Rock Falls High School, graduating in 1958.

After graduation from High School, John served in the United States Army from February 1, 1961 to February 1, 1964. He was in France and achieved the rank of Specialist Fifth class.

He attended the University of Iowa and graduated with an accounting and management degree. While attending college, he married Linda Byl of Mason City, Iowa. Upon graduating from the University of Iowa, John secured a position with Interstate Power Company. He worked for them at Mason City, Dubuque, Oelwein and West Union, Iowa, retiring as a manager in 1995 while at West Union, Iowa.

The Blue Devil girls’ basketball team returned to action last week as the team fell to Upper Iowa Conference opponents North Fayette Valley and Kee.

The team saw its first action in several weeks on Tuesday night, Jan. 5, as the Blue Devils controlled the game early against the TigerHawks.

The West Central boys’ basketball team fell to 1-9 on the season after falling to North Fayette Valley and Kee last week.

The squad played its first game since before the holiday break on Tuesday night, Jan. 5, as the squad fell, 60-30, to Upper Iowa Conference leading North Fayette Valley.

The team traveled to Kee on Friday evening where the team lost by a score of 70-37.
