Robert Bartels

 

Robert Bartels passed away peacefully on Sunday January 3, 2021. He was born in Randalia on June 1, 1924, baptized at Hope Lutheran church Westgate, Iowa and confirmed at Richfield church in Richfield, Iowa.  

Bob attended School Center Number 5 in Randalia, Iowa and graduated high school in Alpha, Iowa.  Except for a brief period when he lived and worked in Waterloo, Bob spent his whole life in Fayette county Iowa.  

During the time he worked at John Deere in Waterloo, he married Eileen Potratz and they briefly lived in Waterloo before making their permanent home in Westgate, Iowa.  Bob and Eileen married at St. Peter Lutheran in Westgate.  Both were longtime members of St. Peter where Bob served as a deacon, church treasurer, and chair of the finance committee.

Sharlene Rose, 84 of Ossian, Iowa died Friday, January 8, 2021 in Oak Creek, Wisconsin after a short illness (non-Covid).  She was born August 13, 1936 to Peter and Martha (Sands) Bushman in Fredericksburg, Iowa. Sharlene graduated from De Sales High School in Ossian, Iowa.

On July 20, 1956, Sharlene was united in marriage with Bernard Wesley Rose at Westside Chapel in Fort Hood, Texas. Besides being an amazing homemaker, when the appropriate time arose Sharlene worked outside the home starting as a cook at De Sales Grade School. She also worked at Graphics in Calmar.  Most will remember her for the treasures she crocheted and knitted as well as her daily walks. She enjoyed spending time with her family and would often travel with them on adventures to see new places

The West Central boys’ basketball team hosted Central on Tuesday night, Jan. 12, in Maynard. Despite a strong start, the Blue Devils eventually fell by a score of 46-31, after struggling in the second half.

The two teams went back-and-forth early, with WC holding a 10-7 advantage after a quarter. The Warriors evened it up by halftime before putting up 29 points in the second half while holding the home team to 14.

North Fayette Valley hosted East Buchanan, Bellevue, and Wapsie Valley on Tuesday evening (Jan. 12) for a full night of dual action. The TigerHawks earned a 47-12 win over the Comets of Bellevue, but fell to East Buchanan and Wapsie Valley.

Last week’s early week action for the North Fayette Valley girls’ basketball team included the first blemish of the 2020-21 campaign, as well as the squad’s 11th overall and eighth UIC win.

The TigerHawks were defeated on Monday night (Jan. 11) against a talented Waukon team, but they picked up the conference win a night later by beating Clayton Ridge on the road.

James Kent McElvania was born on Friday, October 23, 2020 to Jeff and Christine McElvania of Bettendorf. James weighed 9 lbs. 6 oz. and was 20.5 inches long at birth. He joins an older sibling, Teddy MecElvania, 3.

Grandparents are Kent and Lois McElvania of West Union and Bill and Patti Bergeth of West Des Moines.

Great Grandparents are Glen and Pat McElvania of Alden and Merrie Ellen Bergeth of Park Rapids, Minn.

Weber is new Wadena mayor

Weber is new Wadena mayor

 

Randy Weber has become the new mayor of Wadena.

When elected Mayor Jarod Kent recently left office because of moving out of town, Weber, the Mayor Pro-tem, took over Kent’s duties.

Weber has been on the Wadena City Council for the last 15 years. He has been a Wadena resident since 1991. He and his wife, Annette, a teacher at Valley Elementary School, they have two sons; Jordan and Ethan.

Randy is self-employed doing all types of electrical work and construction.
