The Warrior girls put up a season-high 55 points in their win over Postville last week, an effort led by both Allison Heying and Janessa Zweibahmer who each put up 11 points.

“Overall, we played really well,” said coach Justin Izer after the 55-38 win on Tuesday, Jan. 12. “Offensively, scoring 55 points was big for us, but our aggressiveness on the defensive side was key to this win.”

The Warrior wrestling team improved to 12-3 in dual action last week as it won all three of its duals on Tuesday evening, Jan. 12.

South Winn hosted a trio of area schools, including Central Elkader, Edgewood-Colesburg, and Sumner-Fredericksburg on its home mats with the Warriors dominating their first two matchups.

The Warrior boys got win No. seven of the season last week by beating Upper Iowa Conference foe Postville, 62-32, on Tuesday night (Jan. 12).

“We were very aggressive both defensively and offensively right from the tip,” said coach Blake Moen following the victory. “We played very hard for all four quarters. I give our guys credit for coming into this game with a great mindset to get an early lead and continue to build on it.”

Preschool and Kindergarten registration for the South Winneshiek Community School District has been set for the week of Monday, January 25th until Friday, January 29th. Parents may register anytime during the week. Registration may be accomplished by emailing tiwagner@swinn.k12.ia.us.  Please include your child’s name, birth date, and parent contact information. Initial contact with the school is for the purpose of enrollment counts and receiving and filling out the necessary registration materials.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on many facets of the economy. One industry that has been affected by it has been within the recycling and can redemption business.

“I’ve been impacted pretty significantly throughout the past 10 months,” said Pat Nervig, owner of Main Street Liquor and Redemption Center in Calmar, which was established in 2014. “There are only two redemption centers in Winneshiek County and maybe five in all of northeast Iowa. Since the pandemic began, I have seen the number of customers that come through my door double since I opened back up in June.”

It’s a unique partnership between a pair established of local construction companies and Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) that will provide endless benefits and opportunities for all involved.

“We feel that the new Construction Equipment Operator Earn and Learn program here at NICC is something that greatly benefits both students and those interested in following a career in that line of work, as well as the businesses that have partnered with us to help create this opportunity,” said Wendy Mihm-Herold, vice president of business and community solutions at NICC. “Reilly Construction (Ossian) and JB Holland (Decorah) have both been influential in getting this program up and running and have helped develop the curriculum for these courses to give students a learning experience that will get them where they need to be to be successful.”

Michael Frank Heller, 63, of Clermont, Iowa died Saturday, January 9, 2021 at UW Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Michael was born on October 2, 1957 to Elmer and Nancy (Pape) Heller. He graduated from Waterloo West High in 1976.

Mike moved to Clermont and married the love of his life, Mary Schott on April 30, 1977.

Gary Fraser Bostrom, 85 of West Union, Iowa passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021 in the town he loved, surrounded by his family who adored him. Gary was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, friend, business-owner, citizen and Iowa Hawkeye fan. One would be hard-pressed to find a better all-around good guy.
