When the West Union Messiah’s pre-planning committee came together over the summer to discuss this year’s annual Messiah performance, they were facing some very unique challenges.

For 79 years, the West Union community’s Messiah performance has been an area favorite.  Since it’s development in 1941, the annual event has been known to cancel only one time – during World War II.

“One year we did have to change the time of the performance because of a snow storm, but aside from that, it has only been canceled the one time,” said Doug Poppen who has been directing the beloved area event since 1986.

“This is why it was crucial to us to make sure we continue with some kind of a performance this year.  We felt that it was important we do something, whatever that something could be,” Poppen explained.

Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah is doing what is necessary to make sure it is ready for a potential spike in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks.

“It is anticipated there will be a spike in cases around the second week of December due to the number of people that decided to travel and be with non-household loved ones during the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Lisa Radtke, chief administrative officer at Winneshiek Medical Center.

WMC is the second largest Critical Access Hospital in the state of Iowa as it proved 25 beds in the facility. With five of the beds primarily reserved for Obsterical patients, the hospital currently (as of Nov. 25) has approximately ¼ of its beds being occupied by COVID-19 patients.
