Looking back on 2020

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, Iowa governor Kim Reynolds made an announcement that would shock us all.  The governor’s announcement declared the suspension of all public school classes throughout the state of Iowa for 30 days.  The NFV district, and many others in the area, worked hard to implement remote instruction in the following days, unsure as to what would be coming next.  Eventually, Reynolds made the announcement that school buildings would remain closed for the rest of the school year.

EMS crews in Fayette County are next on the list to get the Covid -19 vaccine.

That’s according to Fayette County Public Health Director Jes Wegner. She said earlier this week she was trying to get rosters from the crew chiefs so she could plan an upcoming vaccination session.

“I’m planning a drive-up clinic this week, similar to what we did for the flu vaccinations,” Wegner explained. She pointed out that precise planning is crucial to the vaccination process because once she “spikes” a vial of the Moderna vaccine, she has a six-hour window to administer the 10-11 doses the vial contains.

Wegner said public health nurses were the first to begin getting the vaccine last week. “They got it first because they will be the ones giving the vaccine to others,” Wegner explained. She added that staff at both hospitals in the County, Mercy One in Oelwein and Gundersen Palmer Lutheran in West Union, will be “working through” getting their medical staff vaccinated this week, with the majority having been done on Monday, Dec. 28.
