Clarksville too much for Warrior girls

The Warrior girls played their final game before the holiday break on Monday night (Dec. 21) as they welcomed the Clarksville Indians to town.

“It was a night where we were just two or three steps slower than them,” said coach Justin Izer after a 61-19 loss. “I thought we were not very sound defensively in the first half, giving up 43 points.”

Last week, Ken Reimer, D.V.M, chair of Northeast Iowa Community College’s (NICC) Board of Trustees, announced that Liang Chee Wee, Ph.D., will step down as president of the College effective June 30, 2022.

“For the past 10 years, Dr. Wee’s servant leadership has helped Northeast Iowa Community College become a force in the district, engaging in educational and training opportunities for students, businesses and economic development. District-wide and statewide, Dr. Wee is well known, respected, intelligent and hard working. Under Dr. Wee’s guidance, NICC is more agile and resilient in our fast-changing environment. His staff is well-prepared and positioned for continued growth now and into the future. He has the trust of all who associate with him,” said Reimer.

WMC staff begins receiving COVID-19 vaccine

WMC staff begins receiving COVID-19 vaccine

 

 

The first shipment of 400 COVID-19 vaccine doses (Moderna) was delivered to Winneshiek Medical Center on the afternoon on Tuesday, December 22.  Vaccination of staff began immediately, and Mayo Clinic Health System family medicine physicians Kevin Locke, M.D., and Andy Goodner, M.D., were among the first front line staff to be vaccinated. Front line staff include those who provide direct patient care or support direct patient. 

“I am excited that we now can start vaccinating to begin to end what has been a long, exhausting and heartbreaking pandemic,” said Dr. Goodner. “My thanks go out to our front line nurses and aids who have borne the brunt of the work in caring for our community through this pandemic.  They are priceless and help is now on the way.”

The West Central girls’ basketball team picked up a pair of wins last week as it closed out the first semester portion of its schedule. The team beat Postville, 55-36, on Monday night (Dec. 21) and downed Oelwein, 56-19, on Tuesday night (Dec. 22).

Plagued by a tough fourth quarter, the West Central boys’ basketball team came up just short of picking up a win over Oelwein on Tuesday night (Dec. 22).

The Blue Devils got off to a hot start, carrying an 11-5 advantage into the second quarter. While the Huskies slowly chipped away at the lead, West Central maintained the lead through the first three quarters of the game.

Luke Kuennen, 94, of Oelwein passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday December 22, 2020 at Arlington Place Assisted Living in Oelwein.  Visitation will be private.  A public Mass of Christian Burial was held today, Wednesday, December 30, 2020, 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein with Fr. Ray Atwood officiating.  Those in attendance were required to wear a mask and practice social distancing.  Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein with Military Honors by the Maynard American Legion Honor Guard.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.  For condolences, please visit www.geilenfeldfh.com.

William (Bill) Alfred Larick was born on September 26th, 1953 in West Union, Iowa to Gertrude (Nolan) and Kenneth Larick.  He passed November 30, 2020 unexpectedly in Anchorage, Alaska surrounded by his family.  Bill proudly attended the University of Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!) studying business administration.  He was introduced to Alaska by his uncles during his junior year of college and permanently moved there after graduation.

Paul Peter Johnson, age 83 of Brookings, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2020 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Visitation without the family present will be from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2020, at Eidsness Funeral Home.  Masks are recommended.
