North Fayette Valley to implement mask mandate

North Fayette Valley to implement mask mandate

In a move to try to flatten the curve in a current upswing in COVID-19 cases in our area, North Fayette Valley has implemented a mask mandate beginning today, Wednesday, November 11.

Starting today, students and staff will be required to wear a facemask when maintaining a six-feet distance from one another is not possible.

“We believe these are steps we need to take to keep the people in our buildings safe,” said NFV superintendent Joe Griffith during Monday evening’s school board meeting.  Students that are unwilling to follow these guidelines will be required to access their education remotely, after proper communication with family.

In a recent news release regarding COVID-19, Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospitals and Clinics appealed to the community to do their part in flattening the curve as cases soar in the state of Iowa.

“Our region is in its greatest fight against coronavirus,” Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital and Clinics administrator Patrice Kuennen noted in the release.  “We are seeing increased infections, hospitalizations, and deaths in our communities. Our staff are strained. Our testing has increased with much higher positivity rates.”

While the hospital noted that the community was able to flatten the curve and avoid tragedy last spring and summer by taking precautions such making sure to wear masks, being aware of social distancing guidelines, and implementing regular hand washing, that curve is now on an uptick.
