The West Union Police Department’s fleet has probably never been more up to date, not only in terms of age of vehicles, but also in technology.

The force now has three new vehicles, two of which are hybrids that run off batteries.

GPLHC seeing spike in COVID cases

“The goal is to educate, encourage, and inform people,” said Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Health Center (GPLHC) marketing service manager, Jamie Hoey.  

“COVID-19 is community spread and we have been seeing the numbers shoot way up recently,” Hoey continued.  “We hope that with providing the right information people will make informed decisions that will help slow the spread.” 

All across the country, states are seeing the COVID-19 positivity rates soar, and Fayette County is no different.

Santa to join the lighting of 13th annual Festival of Lights display in West Union

The North Fayette Valley fall production of “Robin Hood and his Masked Band of Merry Persons” is canceled for this weekend, November 13-15.  The production will be shown virtually at a future date that is still to be determined.

Norbert Retterath

 

Norbert Anthony Retterath, 87, of Calmar, went to be with the Lord on November 4, 2020 at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, following a battle with colon cancer.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville, Iowa at  1 p.m., Saturday, November 7, 2020. The Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery, Spillville, Iowa

Norbert was born on November 22, 1932 to Mike and Anna (Heimer) Retterath on the home farm near Meyer, Iowa in Mitchell County. He went to Catholic school through 8th grade in Meyer and two years high school at Visitation in Stacyville. He worked on the family farm two years and then was a cabinetmaker for K. J. Retterath in Adams, Minnesota. He worked at John Deere in Waterloo from 1960 until he retired in 1990.

The South Winneshiek school board met in Ossian Monday night as boardmembers set a date and time of 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, to receive bids for the district’s stadium improvement project.

The deadline will allow the board to discuss its options and potentially award a winner at the December board meeting.

Earlier this month at the Ossian City Council meeting, a pair of representatives from the SOO Green project presented information to the council on the major project that will be coming through Ossian. While the project was briefly explained in last week’s issue, this article will dig deeper into the logistics and purpose of the unique project.

The SOO Green HVDC (high voltage direct current) link is a first-of-its-kind infrastructure project that will transport renewable energy via an underground high-voltage direct current transmission line along an existing railroad, the Canadian Pacific.

A total of 12,143 total votes were cast in Winneshiek County as of the end of Election Day (Nov. 3) with Republican candidate emerging victorious in nearly all races.

“The Winneshiek County election process ran smoothly, efficiently, safely, and with integrity,” said Ben Steines, Winneshiek County Auditor. “This is a testament to all of the hard work of the precinct workers and Auditor’s office staff. Elections involve a lot of long days, procedural details, and stress; but they performed admirably.”

Debra Kay Appelman, 66, of Columbia, TN, passed away on Nov. 1, 2020. Debbie was born on July 21, 1954, in Postville, IA, daughter of the late Clifford and Betty Gisleson. She graduated from Valley High School with the class of 1972.

Visitation will be held Nov. 14, 2020, in the Family Life Center of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A memorial service will follow in the sanctuary.
