Merle Blong

Merle Blong

 

Merle Andrew Blong passed away on the morning of November 11, 2020, after a struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and the rapid onset of the COVID-19 virus.  Merle was born on December 12, 1933 in St. Lucas, Iowa to parents Luke John Blong and Agnes Ann Ditzenbach.  His family lived and farmed east of St. Lucas in the Driftless Area near the confluence of Bass Creek with Sugar Creek.  This beautiful landscape was historically part of the Winnebago Indian Subagency in the 1840s.  

Merle attended St. Luke’s School from 1938 to 1946.  He was a very hard worker and enjoyed working on the farm.  Merle was at his best while performing outdoor tasks instead of going to school. Merle’s greatest enjoyments were hunting, fishing, and observing wildlife.

Adelaide F. Hollinrake, 92 of Maynard, Iowa and formerly of Seaton, Illinois and Flat Rock, Newfoundland, Canada died Wednesday morning, November 11, 2020 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

A Private Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette with Rev. Donald Komboh officiating. Inurnment: At a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Keithsburg, Illinois.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed in her name to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church or the Alzheimer’s’ Association.

Madlyn Ann Houg, 84, of West Union, Iowa died Sunday, November 8, 2020 at Stoney Brook Village, West Union, Iowa.  She was born May 15, 1936 to Floyd and Mildred (Weston) Cline in West Union, Iowa. Madlyn was baptized on November 8, 1936 and confirmed on June 9, 1946 at United Methodist Church. She graduated from high school in Hawkeye in 1954. She continued her education at Upper Iowa University and received her two-year teaching certificate on May 31, 1956 and Bachelors of Arts with a major in Elementary Education and minor in English/Social Studies on May 28, 1962.

Clare M. Hillman, 81, of Maynard, Iowa, died on Tuesday morning, November 10, 2020 at his home.

Private family services will be held at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard.

Interment: Fairbank Cemetery, Fairbank, Iowa.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Clare Matthew Hillman was born on October 29, 1939 at rural Aurora, Iowa, the son of Bruce Forest and Lois Mattie (McDowell) Hillman.  He graduated from Stanley High School in Stanley, Iowa in the class of 1957.  Clare was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Polege on October 11, 1958 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Fairbank, Iowa.

Debra Kay Appelman, 66, of Columbia, TN, passed away on Nov. 1, 2020. 

Debbie was born on July 21, 1954, in Postville, IA, daughter of the late Clifford and Betty Gisleson. Married for 47 years, she and her devoted husband, Arvin, enjoyed traveling the country in their RV, riding their motorcycle, and taking trips in their Jensen Healey. She also loved taking care of her garden, baking with her granddaughters, cheering on the grandchildren at their sporting events, and dancing.

Debbie was a faithful member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Debbie will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.

Logan Henry Blue, 22, of rural West Union, died Saturday, November 14, 2020, at his home, as a result of a tragic accident. 

Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. The Mass will be livestreamed on Becker-Milnes & Rettig Facebook Page. Fellowship and refreshments will be served at the Hawkeye Community Hall following the Mass. Inurnment will be held at a later date. Rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, with visitation will be held following on Friday, November 20 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas and for one hour preceding the Mass on Saturday. All attending the visitation and Mass are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing.

On Tuesday, November 10, 2020, Roy Terrence Post passed away at the age of 85.

Services are currently pending at this time.

Roy was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa to Lloyd and Edith (Groth) Post on June 9, 1935. He moved to a farm west of Randalia with his family in 1944. He graduated from Randalia High School in 1952. He was married to Joyce Arlene Fridley June 14, 1959, later divorced. He served in  the Iowa Army National Guard from 1957 to, April 30, 1963. He was a member of the Randalia Volunteer Fire Department and the Sumner Jaycees. He was married to Linda Lamphier April 4, 1981, later divorced. He purchased the farm in 1967 and farmed until 1989 before moving to Fayette. He was a truck driver for Schneider Motorways in Gunder, Moss Roofing in West Union, and Fayette Lumber in Fayette.
