New light-up stop sign improves safety in Ossian

Thanks to the ingenuity of Ossian city council member Mitch Holthaus, the community was able to add a new lighted stop sign at the Highway 52 crossing near St. Theresa of Calcutta School. The City looked at purchasing a similar sign, but Holthaus was able to design and build his own version at a fraction of the cost. (Zakary Kriener photo)

It’s a win-win situation for the Ossian community as a new LED-lit stop sign will help make the town safer while also saving the City money.

“We began discussing the possibility of adding blinking lights to the stop sign that sits in front of St. Theresa of Calcutta School on Highway 52 before and after school,” explained Mitch Holthaus, who has served on the council for the past seven years. “The sign has been there for years, but we wanted to do something to increase the visibility for drivers. I’ve seen a lot of vehicles blow right through the stop sign, especially traffic coming into town. We wanted something that would help catch the eye of drivers.”

SW going virtual in place of snow days

South Winneshiek freshman Eric Kriener works on an assignment during a study hall period. While Kriener is one of the face-to-face learners at the school, others students are learning in different ways this year as the school is providing teaching methods through full-time online classes and for remote learners that are isolating or quarantining. With the implementation of virtual learning methods, the district has been able to implement a plan that will allow students to continue learning and not miss a beat on snow/inclement weather days. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the entire world in one way or another over the past several months, one of the most heavily impacted areas has been the education system. With Iowa schools closing doors to in-person attendance last spring and schools taking new approaches toward teaching since the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, districts have had to implement many new ways of educating students including offering online classes. With these new capabilities along with recent legislation changes, South Winneshiek will begin offering remote learning on snow/inclement weather days in place of make-up days.

Walz family thankful despite life-changing year

For Spillville’s Becky and Jeremy Walz and their family, the past year has been one of the most difficult as Jeremy suffered a stroke in March that left him fighting for his life. In the past eight months, Spillville couple Jeremy and Becky Walz and their family have seen their world flip upside down. It was March 8 when 45-year-old Jeremy suffered a stroke that left him with an initial prognosis that he would likely not be able to live without the assistance of a breathing tube. Against all odds, Jeremy and his family – including children Alex, Andre, Ashley, and Allison – fought hard and proved that prognosis wrong.

“This Thanksgiving season, I think the thing our whole family is most thankful for is that we can celebrate together,” said Becky, Jeremy’s wife of 21 years. “This year we learned just how quickly things can change and how important it is to appreciate everything you have.”

The day that their lives changed forever was March 8. It was a typical Sunday for Jeremy and Becky as they made breakfast together that morning and were both enjoying the day off.

“Everything seemed normal. The kids were all home (from where they currently live in Cedar Falls) the night before for a birthday party and nothing was out of the ordinary,” explained Becky. “It was around 3:15 and Jeremy had went to the bathroom. When he came back, I noticed that he was breathing kind of funny.”
