Jamey “Curly” “Putts” Burns, 48, of rural Hawkeye, died Sunday, October 11, 2020, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, after a sudden illness. 

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2020, starting at 3:00 PM at the Hawkeye Community Hall. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye is assisting the family.

Ella M. (Kloft) Pitz, 87, of LaMotte, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2020.  Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Otter Creek.  Visitation was 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m, Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue.  Additional visitation will begin one hour prior to Mass on Wednesday at the Church.  Burial will be in Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in LaMotte.

Funeral Mass will be live streamed on the Hachmann Funeral Home Facebook Page.

It is required to utilize masks and respect social distancing during the visitation at the funeral home and at the funeral mass due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Gilbert A. Winter age 84 of New Hampton, IA, formerly of Waucoma, died Saturday, October 10, 2020, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes. 

A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, at St. Mary’s Catholic church, Waucoma, with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. 

Public graveside services were held at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2020, at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Waucoma. 

Arrangements are entrusted with Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in Waucoma. 

Gilbert was born July 22, 1936, in New Hampton, IA, the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Nolte) Winter, and along with his older brother, he grew up on the family’s farm, where both Winter boys helped their father with chores. 

Gilbert began his education at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Waucoma and then transferred to Waucoma High School, where he was the president of the Class of 1954.

The NFV volleyball team saw its 2020 season come to an end Monday night in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs as the TigerHawks fell, 3-0, to Oelwein.

While player statistics and coach’s comments were unavailable at press time, the TigerHawks fell by scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 25-10.

The loss gives the TigerHawks a final record of 5-14 (4-4 in UIC play).

Oelwein advanced to the Region 6 semifinal round where it will take on Union on Wednesday night.

The North Fayette Valley cross country runners had the opportunity to compete in front of many hometown fans and supporters Thursday afternoon as the TigerHawks hosted the 2020 Upper Iowa Conference Cross Country Meet in West Union. 

Up against some of toughest teams in the area, the Class 2A No. 15-ranked NFV boys captured the team title while the girls (2A Team To Watch) earned runner-up honors.

In the first round of the 8-Man State football playoffs on Friday night, the Blue Devils of West Central headed to Reinbeck to take on the 7-0 Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels.

Still looking for their first win of the season, the Devils would need a monumental upset to keep its season alive. Unfortunately, the Rebels were as good as advertised as they sent WC back home with a 62-6 loss.

The 2020 State football playoffs kicked off across the state on Friday night, including a rematch from the regular season for North Fayette Valley and Crestwood.

In the first installment of the contest, the Cadets pulled out a two-point victory in week three to get their first win of the season. This time around, the TigerHawks would look to get even with their district foe.

Instead of a hole in one, people on the greens at the West Union Golf Course might just be trying to find the number one hole when it comes to trout fishing.

Don’t be surprised if fly rods don’t start showing up alongside drivers and putters in people’s golf bags and don’t be shocked to see someone golfing in a set of waders.

Otter Creek, which meanders through the golf course grounds, has fish in it, and not just any fish, but some of the most prized game fish in Iowa.
