Fayette County Freedom Rock unveiling Friday

It has been over a year in the making, and this Friday, Fayette County’s Freedom Rock will be officially unveiled.

The rock, which has been sitting in its spot along W. Water Street in Fayette arrived in northeast Iowa in April, 2019.

Since its arrival, area community members have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of artist and Freedom Rock project founder, Bubba Sorenson to decorate the rock in a design unique to Fayette County.

Inspired by the movie “Saving Private Ryan,” Sorenson began the project in an effort to recognize veterans in a unique fashion, painting each boulder throughout Iowa’s 99 counties himself.  It is important to Sorenson that each rock is to be unique and different, concentrating on what each county or area has that sets them apart.

Last week, the talented artist braved the wet weather to paint the rock, an event that many have been excited to see.  The efforts will be unveiled during a 12:30 p.m. ceremony at 3015 Water St. in Fayette on Friday, September 18.

"Our family was very appreciative of the turnout for our auction last Thursday.  We were very happy the parcels that were offered all went to local farmers,” said Therese (Heying) Slack of last week’s land parcel sale of her family’s business Heying Firms, Inc.  “Of course, as all farming families know, it is a bittersweet moment to sell land that has been in the family for so many years, but the time had come.”

Blocking was the key to South Winn’s 33-6 victory over North Tama on Friday night. The Warriors rushed for 268 yards and five touchdowns in the win, while holding the Redhawks to only 140 yards and one score on the ground.

“I’m very pleased with how we contolled the game on offense,” said coach Jason Ohrt after his team improved to 2-0. “Our running game was led by some great blocking up front by Calvin Knutson, Ethan Timp, Isaiah Ott, Lane Quandahl, and Collin Hageman.”

Ohrt also noted that his defense showed up in a big way, holding North Tama to only one score on the night.

The Warrior volleyball team competed in its first tournament of the season Saturday at New Hampton where it suffered three losses on the day. South Winn lost by scores of 2-0 matches against Saint Ansgar, Tripoli, and North Butler.

“Our team continues to embrace the challenge of playing good competition and looking within each game to see what improvement we have and can still be making,” said coach Alex Smith following the tournament. “Playing three matches allowed us to look at some different personnel on the floor and having a solid week of practice will prepare us well for our next varsity competition.”

After having their first two meets of the season canceled due to heat, the Warrior cross country teams were finally able to get their season started Thursday night in Charles City.

“Considering it was the first meet of the year, we had some outstanding performances,” said coach Scott Conway. “Several athletes began the year with their lifetime bests or near-lifetime bests. The way the athletes competed is what impressed me the most!”
