SWXC takes care of business at Central

South Winn runner Hunter Wagner runs hard at a recent area cross country meet as he and the No. 14-ranked Warrior boys continue their 2020 season. Last week at Central Elkader, Wagner took 24th in the varsity race in a time of 19:49. While normally a 24th place finish would bring in valuable team points, the Warriors already had their points allotted as they placed all five scorers in the top seven. (Jerry Wadian photo)

South Winn was the team to beat in Elkader last week as the Class 1A No. 5-ranked girls and No. 14-ranked boys each finished atop their respective races.

Up against a field of teams that included the No. 10-ranked team in Class 3A (Charles City) and No. 12-ranked Class 1A team (Kee), the Warrior girls stuck together and claimed the win in impressive fashion. With Warrior runners taking the third through sixth finishes in the race, 36 points was enough to finish eight points ahead of Charles City.

Anyone that has visited the Ossian City Park this summer may have noticed a bit of a change to the landscaping surrounding the playground equipment.

Earlier this summer, the City of Ossian removed all of the old mulch that previously surrounded the equipment and replaced it with rubber material. The new rubber pellets will provide a safer play area, which will also save the City money in the long run.

“This stuff won’t break down over time, meaning it is saving the City money,” said Don DiLaura, City of Ossian maintenance. “There is absolutely no metal in the rubber like some of the playgrounds out there. This material is very safe.”

After a week off, the West Central football team was back playing under the lights Friday night as they took on Midland on the road.

Despite getting back several players that were recovering from injuries, the Blue Devils were unable to match up against the Eagles as they fell by a score of 62-14.

“Our lack of size shows as we get worn down by bigger bodies,” said coach Steve Milder after the loss. “We played excellent defense in the first and third quarters and are disappointed in the final score, as the game was much closer than it shows.”
