Watermelon Days postponed until 2021

Watermelon Days postponed until 2021

The Fayette Watermelon Days committee has announced that “after careful consideration” they decided to postpone this year's event until 2021.

“With the rise of Covid-19, we feel we would not be able to host a celebration in a fashion that would keep everyone safe,” said a news release from the Committee.

“We hope to see you all next year on Sept. 10,11, and 12. It is our hope that when we meet again in 2021 we will be Covid-19 free and we will have a celebration of a lifetime providing as many free events as we can,” the news release said.

Fair Board President Kevin Converse said now that Fayette County Fair is actually up and running, he’s expecting a great fair.

According to Converse the plan the Board has put in place to keep people safe from the threat of Covid – 19 is one that has had  a lot of thought and planning gone into it. So much so that it has met with approval from the State Department of Public Health.

“Our updated mitigation plan did receive approval from the Iowa Department of Health. We are excited about the Fair this week and hope people review our mitigation plan and follow its guidelines if they choose to come to the fair,” Converse explained.

In a statement released to the public, Clermont Community Club announced they would be postponing the annual BBQ in the Park event.

“After seeing the Fayette County Health Advisory this afternoon, out of an abundance of caution we have decided to postpone our annual BBQ in the Park event,” a spokesperson said in the statement.  “We had safety protocols planned to minimize exposure, but given the recent rise in cases we do not want to risk spreading the virus if people are asymptomatic.”

The statement went on to say that the club intends to monitor the situation going forward, in the hopes that the event can be rescheduled in the fall.

South Winn advanced in the Class 1A District 6 baseball playoffs with a 10-0 win over visiting Maq Valley in six innings.

Heavy rains forced the game to be delayed with the first pitch thrown around 8:15 p.m.

Ethan Luzum dominated the Wildcats, fanning 14 of the 18 batters he faced in pitching a one-hit shutout.

Seth Greve singled home a first-inning run and SW used three runs in the third and five in the fifth to break the game wide open.

Kody Kleve singled home two of the third-inning runs and Cael Kuboushek tripled home the third run.

With the win, the Warriors were scheduled to face  Ed-Co Tuesday, July 12, at 7 p.m. in Calmar. However strong thunderstorms are expected that afternoon and evenings so the game may be delayed or even postponed.
