Giving the gift of life

“Wake, Pray, Transfer Day!” Molli Steffens was eager for the moment the embryo was transferred earlier this week.  While it was pineapples decorating her shirt and mask, Steffens says she was eager to be a “couch potato” for a few days while she let her body do it’s important job following the transfer.

“I had always offhandedly told Justin that I would love to carry other people's babies,” smiled Molli Steffens of her decision to become surrogate, and carry a baby for another couple.

“As I kept mentioning it, I realized I was pretty serious about wanting to help others realize their dream of becoming parents, and surrogacy was the best way to do that,” the Clermont native continued. “We've had some friends and family members struggle with infertility, so I started doing some research about surrogacy in Iowa.”

For Steffens, pregnancy had always been easy for her, and while she and her husband, Justin, knew they were done growing their family, the decision to help another family grow was an easy one.

Fair board president proud of Fair 2020

Fair Board President Kevin Converse had nothing but praise for the way things were handled in terms of sanitizing and keeping things clean to help curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus at this year’s Fayette County Fair.

“I’d like to give a big shout out to all our sanitization and cleaning people. I thought they went above and beyond and really worked hard to keep the areas clean. I heard lots of comments how great everything looked,” Converse related.

He also pointed out that he heard lots of comments praising the Fair Board for going a head with their decision to have a fair this year.

“People were constantly coming up to me telling me how appreciative they were that we were able to put on the fair and bring some normalcy back to Fayette County,” he revealed.

He said attendance did not seem to be affected by people being afraid to attend events with crowds.

“Grandstand events went off great with the kind of numbers we had expected Fayette Ambulance, Emergency Management, West Union Police were great assets and worked very hard to do their part,” he said about those who helped check temps and screen audience members before they entered the grandstand on the nights when entertainment was offered.

Converse had nothing but praise for his fellow Board members, pointing out that they all had to work a little harder than usual for this fair to become a reality.

“I’m very proud of the Board They really stepped up and we really worked together to pull this off. It was really a learning experience for all of us and in some ways I think many fairs will be dealing with the issues we dealt with this year, next year and we will be a step ahead,” Converse said.

“As far as the youth side of things, I felt all went very well,” said Fayette County Extension Youth Coordinator Michele Kelly.

District champ Warriors one away from State

It was razor-thin close Saturday night in Calmar as the ball is in the MFL/MM fielder’s glove as  Winn DH Logan Hageman slides into the bag. The call was a quick and emphatic, “Safe,” as the SW sophomore steals his second base of the game.’ The Warriors wound up with seven thefts in the four inning, 15-0 District championship victory. South Winn baseball won both District 6 baseball games last week, giving them the District championship and leaving them just one win away from the State Baseball Tourney at Principal Field in Des Moines.

The Substate 3 game for the right to go to Des Moines was scheduled for Tuesday, July 21, in Cresco. The opponent was Saint Ansgar, the only team to put a blemish on the Warrior’s record this  season. Results of that game will be in next week’s Bee.

South Winn made it to the Substate contest Saturday night by beating visiting MFL/MM, 15-0, in four innings.

Dick Horne is 2020 Winneshiek County Hall of Fame recipient

This year’s Winneshiek County Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame to recipient is Dick Horne.

Dick spent 33 years with Extension. He began his Winneshiek County career in 1970 as the 4-H Youth Leader and later became the extension director from 1977-2000.

“His devotion to the 4-H program continues today as he can be found supporting the 4-H Gala or bringing out the best of kids, on the microphone, at the County Fair Pee Wee Dairy Show for the past 30 years,” said Francesca Reyes, Winneshiek County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Office Manager.

Dick Horne grew up in Canton, OH. He was the older of two boys. His family lived above a grocery store, and the landlord had a brother that was a dairy farmer. Dick worked at that dairy farm for several summers. He went on to attend Ohio State and pursue his love for Dairy Science.
