Sidelined: Covic-19 influences Olson's decision to hang up umpire gear

Frank Olson has spent decades umpiring softball games, but has decided to hang up his gear for the 2020 season as a safety precaution.  Always on the go, Olson’s ump schedule consists of well over 100 games per season.  With COVID-19 still a concern, Olson he isn’t willing to risk the health of his community by traveling so far and interacting with so many people. Here, Olson explains his decision, while also tossing out some softball and baseball measurement facts on the North Fayette Valley field as TigerHawk catcher, Abby Reichter looks on. (Megan Molseed photo)

For nearly five decades, Frank Olson has been a fixture on ball fields throughout the state of Iowa and beyond.

From Mason City, to Davenport, to West Union, Olson has been a fixture as an umpire on the fields, officiating for hundreds of softball games each season.

“It’s what I do each year,” grinned Olson, as he stood on the edge of the North Fayette Valley softball field.  “It’s not hyperbole when I say it becomes a way of life.”
