Frank Olson has spent decades umpiring softball games, but has decided to hang up his gear for the 2020 season as a safety precaution. Always on the go, Olson’s ump schedule consists of well over 100 games per season. With COVID-19 still a concern, Olson he isn’t willing to risk the health of his community by traveling so far and interacting with so many people. Sidelined: Covid-19 influences Olson's decision to hang up umpire gear

For nearly five decades, Frank Olson has been a fixture on ball fields throughout the state of Iowa and beyond.
From Mason City, to Davenport, to West Union, Olson has been a fixture as an umpire on the fields, officiating for hundreds of softball games each season.
“It’s what I do each year,” grinned Olson, as he stood on the edge of the North Fayette Valley softball field. “It’s not hyperbole when I say it becomes a way of life.”
