South Winn using its technology to make masks for hospital

South Winneshiek High School Science teacher Jason Drucker models one of the face shields that he helped produce recently. He, along with fellow staffer Mike Johnson, Middle School Technology teacher, came up with a method to make the shields using the school’s 3D printers.

School may be out, but that doesn’t mean that staffers at South Winneshiek School District aren’t staying involved and providing some needed help in the battle against COVID – 19.

School staff are currently utilizing some of the school’s technological capabilities to produce component parts and whole facemasks for medical staff at Winneshiek County Hospital in Decorah.

Superintendent Kris Einck explained how the project came about.

“In early April Iowa school districts were asked to complete a survey.  The Iowa Department of Education (IDOE) was interested to see if district/nonpublic schools had 3D printer(s) that the school would consider loaning for a period of time to local nonprofit companies for use to make face shields necessary for medical care providers to use to reduce their exposure to COVID-19.  Shortly after submitting the survey the IDOE reached out to those schools that were interested with directives.”

Illyria Church members giving services a personal touch

The pews at the Illyria Church are festooned with hand-drawn, homemade, or computer-generated self-portraits of the church members who would commonly be attending services. This was some of the congregation members’ way of being at church in spite of the CORVID – 19 restriction banning large gatherings of people. (Pat Reinig photos)

By Pam Reinig, Pastor at Illyria Church

Although churches have been closed since late March I have “seen” the members of my congregation weekly—and not once have we defied the governor’s order prohibiting large gatherings.

I am pastor of Illyria Community Church in Elgin, which is home to some of the area’s most caring and clever people. I’ve been live streaming our Sunday services and mid-week Christian Ed class for four weeks as part of our commitment to stay connected even as COVID-19 keeps us apart.

The first time I stood in the pulpit looking out over an empty sanctuary, I commented on the loneliness of being alone in the church. The following week dozens of photos pulled and printed from our Face book page were taped to the pews. Each had been carefully selected and placed in the pew most often occupied by the person or persons in each picture.

COVID - 19 creates quality time for mother and sons on turkey hunt

Lisa Davis seemed to be just as happy to be able to spend time with her son, Nate Davis, as she was about the turkey she recently bagged. This was her first turkey-hunting trip and she had Nate for a guide. (Submitted photo)

Bringing something good out of the COVID – 19 pandemic is rare if not almost impossible, but it seems that it has brought about a memorable and lasting mother/son bonding experience.

Lisa Davis owns The Green Door gift shop in Clermont. Most springs would see her business starting to pick up dramatically from the winter blahs, as the tourist season was beginning to come again. This year however, as we all know, has been different. With the COVID – 19 preventative measures being followed, her shop remains closed to walk-ins from the public. Needless to say, she had time on her hands.

That’s when twin sons Jack and Nate stepped in.

For the first time in it’s history Upper Iowa University is giving potential new students, virtual tours of its campus and facilities.

“We are indeed doing virtual tours.  We offer all future students an opportunity to experience Upper Iowa University and talk with UIU faculty and staff through these virtual visits to keep them safe,” said Office of Communications and Marketing Executive Director Karl Easttorp.

Normally potential students would be invited to the campus for at least a day of touring the campus, talking to instructors and finding out how things are going to go once they start classes. Since the campus is shut down for the COVID – 19 prevention measures, they will have to do everything online.

Area towns giving breaks on water bill deadlines

Area towns giving breaks on water bill deadlines

There’s one less thing for area residents to worry about in the midst of the COVID – 19 pandemic…..and that’s getting your water bill paid on time.

Most towns in our coverage area have forgiven any late fees normally charged when a bill is paid after the cutoff date and have also done away with the practice of turning off a resident’s water when payments get way too late. Some towns have done away with the bills altogether until a date further down the road.

“At the last council meeting (April 6), the city council decided to not turn off any water due to unpaid utility bills until after the May 4, council meeting, in which they will re-evaluate at that time. The council also waived any late penalties for the month of April. The late penalty is 6 percent of the utility bill,” said Fayette City Administrator Kris McGrane.

Karole Angerillo

Karole Angerillo

It is with great sadness in one hand, and jubilant celebration in the other, that I announce the news:

Karole Angerillo has shed her earthly bonds and is now in the everlasting care and love of her savior, Jesus Christ.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me,though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.   John. 25 -26

In the early morning light of April 2, 2020, under the tender care of her Stoney Brooke family staff, and in the company of her daughter, Karole lost her battle with heart and lung disease, just 3 months shy of her 86th birthday.

Over the past year she was blessed with visits, both in person and via video chat, from cherished family and friends from coast to coast. Many times she remarked how wonderful it was that her loved ones came to see her while she was still alive.
