“NFV has a long-standing reputation of success in both academics and extracurricular areas,” said Joe Griffith, who has been hired to take over the North Fayette Valley Superintendent position upon the retirement of current Superintendent, Duane Willhite, at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.   “It is clear the district is proud of their successes and is willing to work for continued improvement.”

Griffith comes to the district from Waukon, where he is currently serving as the preschool-fifth grade principal in the Allamakee school district.

“My family is excited about my new role,” he smiled.   “This past weekend, we looked at few houses.”

Griffith even toured the North Fayette Valley Middle School with his wife Chasity, who worked as a Lab Tech at the Winneshiek Medical Center for nearly 20 years, and son, Ryan who will be attending sixth grade in the fall.

A 145-year-old house is getting a new home.

Built in 1875 by Jerome Napoleon Robins, the house on Highway 56 midway between West Union and Elkader, is off its foundation and will soon be on the move.

Mark and Mona Benson raised three children in the house, built a large addition on to it and practically rebuilt it over the years. It must have been a good job because the house is not only still standing but it is getting moved to a new location to play a major part in another family’s lives.

The Fayette County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Monday, March 9, at the regular Board meeting to deny an application for a 7000-head hog confinement operation to be build near the town of Hawkeye.

It would appear however that the denial is a mute point since Reicks View Farms has met the Iowa Department of Natural Resources standards for a operation of this kind based on their matrix scoring system. The project scored 480. The minimum they would have to score would be 440 to qualify for approval.

A group of Hawkeye area residents were at the meeting and through spokesperson Theresa Kapler asked the Board to deny the request, hoping that it will send a message to the DNR prior to them giving their final approval of the project. The County has 30 days before they have to submit the project for DNR approval and it was decided earlier that they would wait until that 30-day time limit had expired before submitting the project request. This was also at the request of the group from Hawkeye who are hoping the extra time may help them gain support.
