“As soon as I saw the north-facing windows I was sold!” exclaimed Rachel Hanken, local photographer and owner of Unique Memories by Rachel.

“This kind of light is every photographers dream,” she continued with a laugh as she gestured toward the floor-to-ceiling windows in her new studio.  “I can’t wait to start exploring ideas.”

Hanken, who is celebrating 10 years in business this year, is excited to add space to her growing business.

“I loved where I was, but it was time to find a bigger space,” said Hanken.  “A lot of what I do is on location, but it’s nice to have a lot of options in-studio.”

The new location, which sits on the corner of Vine Street and East Elm Street in West Union, will allow the longtime photographer more options when considering projects.

Human trafficking abolitionist coming to NICC

When he’s not touring or recording music as the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Remedy Drive, David Zach follows another passion with equal fervor –  abolishing human trafficking throughout the world.

Zach has made nine international deployments to Southeast Asia and Latin America as an undercover operative with the abolitionist group, The Exodus Road. While undercover, Zach identifies instances of minors being sold and captures actionable evidence of illegal trafficking activities in brothels and red-light districts. The information and evidence The Exodus Road gathers leads to raids on establishments that result in the arrests of traffickers.

Zach tours college campuses and visits communities in the US to share his experiences. He believes that ordinary human beings can make a tremendous impact on freedom and justice in the world.

Now the human rights advocate and musician’s next tour stop is Northeast Iowa Community College, hosting Zach at the Calmar campus on Feb. 3 in the Wilder Auditorium, and at the Peosta campus on Feb. 4 in Conference Centers 1 & 4. He will present three times each day – 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Each presentation is 60 minutes, with time for Q-n-A for community members. The presentations are free and open to the public.
