Doris Rademaker

 

Doris Rademaker, 93, of West Union, Iowa died Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Maple Crest Manor in Fauette, Iowa. Doris Jean Rademaker was born on May 20, 1926 in Oelwein, Iowa.  She was the daughter of Earl and Norma Butler, both long-time residents of Oelwein. Doris attended school in Oelwein and graduated from Oelwein High School. 

In 1949, while working at the Oelwein Daily Register, she met Adrian “Abe” Rademaker at a dance and they were married on November 26, 1950. Abe and Doris were life-long companions and celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2000. Although Abe passed away in 2001, their love has endured. 

Abe and Doris resided in Maynard until 1956 with the first two of their four children, daughter, Becky born January 3, 1952 and son, Doug, born April 24, 1954.

Shirley Biermann

 

Shirley Biermann, 91, of West Union, Iowa died Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at her daughter’s home in West Union, Iowa.  She was born February 5, 1928 to Otis Chicken and Mabel Weston in West Union. Shirley graduated from West Union High School.

Shirley was united in marriage with Harlan Biermann on June 14, 1947 in West Union. Three children were born to this union. Shirley was a homemaker and also helped her husband as a bookkeeper at Biermann Plumbing and Heating in West Union. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, golfing, bridge club and playing cards. Shirley enjoyed her time spent at the cabin in Harpers Ferry.

The North Fayette Valley bowlers hit the lanes Friday afternoon at Panther Lanes in Tripoli as the TigerHawks and Denver Cyclones did battle.

The NFV girls picked up the wins over Denver as Emily Guyer bowled a 177-196-373 to lead the team. Hailey Wurzer (160-167-327) and Erika Woodson (121-180-301) also scored over 300 for the TH girls.

Other competing bowlers included Shelby Holden (107-91-198), Breanna Baumler (99-96-195), and Sierra Kemp (74-93-167)

It was a busy week for the TigerHawk wrestlers as the team competed in a total of seven duals, going 3-4 against a tough lineup of teams.

North Fayette Valley began the week Tuesday, Jan. 21, at North Linn where the team picked up wins over Central and North Linn, but fell to No. 5-ranked Independence.

At 132 pounds, Levi Lauer went 3-0 on the day and picked up a pair of falls to lead the TigerHawks.

Saturday, NFV headed to Denver to participate in the Denver Dual tournament. The TigerHawks went 1-3 on the day with a win over Sioux City East and losses to Dyersville Beckman, Mid-Prairie, and No. 8-ranked Denver (1A).

Colton Schupbach led the way for the TigerHawks as he went 3-0 on the day including a pair of pins.

The TigerHawk girls’ basketball team got back to its winning ways last week as it won three straight after losing four in a row the previous week.

NFV picked up wins against South Winneshiek, Oelwein, and West Central to improve to 9-6 on the season.

The North Fayette Valley boys’ basketball team pushed its winning streak to five and improved its overall record to 9-6 thanks to a 4-0 week that included wins over South Winneshiek, Oelwein, West Central, and North Butler.

The TigerHawks kicked off the week on Tuesday (Jan. 21) with a big win over one of the top teams in the Upper Iowa Conference, South Winneshiek.

With a healthy lineup, NFV and SW kept it close in the first half with the TigerHawks holding a one-point advantage at the half, but the TigerHawk strength showed in the second half as the home team pulled away for a 60-48 win.

Junior Kole Johnson had a game-high 18 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists to lead the way for NFV.

In the program’s first year of existence, the North Fayette Valley girls’ wrestling team produced a pair of top-three finishers at the 2020 IWCOA (Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association) Girls’ State Wrestling Tournament.

The tournament, which was held Friday and Saturday at Waverly-Shell Rock High School in Waverly, featured hundreds of girls from all over the state.

Junior 152-pounder Val Boleyn picked up four pins in the tournament before falling to Dubuque Walhert’s Alaina Schmidt (8-0) in the finals. Boleyn finished the season with a 12-6 record.

At 195 pounds, junior Abby Boehm finished her season with a win as she took third place in her weight class.

The Fayette County Board of Supervisors cut salary recommendations from the County Compensation Board by 40 percent across the board at the regular board meeting, Monday, Jan. 26.

In December the Compensation Board, which makes salary recommendations for all elected county officials, had approved increases of 6 percent for Sheriff Marty Fisher and County Attorney Wayne Saur, and 5 percent for the three Supervisors, Janel Bradley, Marty Stanbrough and Jeanine Tellin; Auditor Lori Moellers, Treasurer Kyle Jacobsen, and Recorder Karen Ford.

Those increase percentages went down to 3.6 and 3 percent respectively with the 40 percent reduction.

The 2020-2021 salaries will now be as follows:

Board of Supervisors - $37,296.30, from $36,210.

Recorder, Treasurer, Auditor - $63,259.51 from $61,417.

County Attorney - $82,082.28 from $79,230.

County Sheriff - $89,408.87 from $86,302.

The increases as recommended by the Compensation Board would have put Fisher’s salary at $91,480; Saur’s at $83,984; Ford, Moellers and Jacobsen at $64,488, and the three Supervisors, Bradley, Tellin and Stanbrough, at $38,021.

Members and friends of the cattle industry are invited to attend the 65th Annual Fayette County Cattlemen Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet on Saturday Feb. 1, at the West Union Events Center (10201 Harding Road, West Union).  The event will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m. with dinner to follow at 6 p.m.

All paid Fayette County Cattlemen members for 2020 will receive two prime rib meals.  Additional meals can be purchased at the door for $17.  Those wishing to join the Fayette County Cattlemen Association may also pay their dues at the door.
